The Inventory Placement team owns the systems that decide where in Amazon's fulfillment network to put inventory for the millions of products that Amazon sells. We build optimization models to make these placement decisions driven by signals such as target inventory based on forecasted customer demand, and the available capacity at various points in our network. Inventory placement is central to achieving Amazon's objectives to minimize the cost of fulfillment while offering selection to customers at the fastest possible delivery speeds. Our systems are built entirely in-house, and are on the cutting edge in automated large scale supply chain planning and optimization systems. We're simultaneously developing the science of supply chain planning and solving some of the toughest computational challenges at Amazon. Unlike many companies who buy existing off-the-shelf planning systems, we are responsible for studying, designing, and building systems to suit Amazon's needs.

You will lead a software development organization, and partner with product managers, business intelligence engineers, and research scientists in the Inventory Placement team to develop new features and models. You will design innovative ways to validate and gain insights from your systems' inputs and outputs, as well as focusing on the effectiveness of your system to meet business objectives.

A successful candidate will have an established track record of developing and delivering complex distributed software systems, a keen technical aptitude, excellent project management skills, solid communication skills, and be driven to achieve results. You also thrive in a fast-paced environment, have a focus on hiring and developing engineers, have strong skills in analyzing and improving software development processes, and are highly customer focused and passionate about solving real business problems. We have a team culture that encourages innovation and expect individuals and management alike to take a high degree of ownership for the product vision, and project delivery. In addition, you will unblock teams and achieve a cross-team cohesive work environment, balancing business needs with technical constraints, and taking calculated risks to maximize business benefit.

Software Development Managers at Amazon are expected to quickly understand organizational and product goals and map them to managed project deliverables. They must be able to divide tasks across a team and manage team execution. They are fully responsible for the day-to-day operations of the team and held to a high standard on the quality of product produced and the quality of ongoing support and maintenance provided to our customers. They must build effective teams and organizational structure. Hire and develop the best talent to execute on their vision.
