General Summary of Position:
Reporting to the Laboratory Safety Manager, the Laboratory Safety Specialist has multi-faceted responsibilities for the general oversight, implementation and administration of the University's comprehensive Laboratory Safety and Compliance Program and assisting other EHS programs as required. He/she identifies deficiencies, implements corrective actions, provides safety training and awareness throughout the university community to assure safe practices and compliance with applicable regulations, standards, and best management practices. He/she assists the University in effecting compliance with various Federal, State, and Local regulatory requirements and University Policies.
Minimum Qualifications (Required):
Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Health and Safety or Industrial Hygiene or related fieldFive years of experience in environmental health and safety or industrial hygiene fieldMust be able to complete a 40-hour HAZWOPER Training and willing to be part of our 24/7 emergency response teamMust be able to wear air purifying respirators or SCBAMust have RCRA, DOT/IATA Training or able to pass course within six monthsMust be committed to professional growthThe ability to work effectively with diverse groupsAdditional Considerations:
Technology Skills Required:
Must be proficient in technology use; database development, querying, word processing, spreadsheet development, using Microsoft Office to accomplish work related tasks as requiredDemonstrated ability to perform Internet or library research to synthesize technical and regulatory information for decision making. Must be able to use, calibrate and troubleshoot industrial hygiene monitoring equipmentPreferred Qualifications:
Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH)Understanding of Code of Mass Regulation (CMR) 310 (Haz Waste Rules)Understanding of Indoor Air Quality guidelines,Understanding of laboratory best practices, NFPA 45 and 30, OSHAUnderstanding of Laboratory Safety EquipmentExperience Shipping Hazardous Materials (DOT/IATA)Understanding of concepts of Biosafety,Understanding of Asbestos and Microbial programsMust have good oral and written communication skillsMust be a motivated self-starter requiring minimum supervisionPrevious experience working with an academic institution, or healthcare facility desirable
