Job Summary

Under general supervision of the Supervising Plumber, the Plumber works independently or as a team member to perform the full range of skilled plumbing work including the installation, maintenance, inspection, modification, remodel and repair of mechanical plumbing equipment and fixtures for water, gas, oil, steam, sewage, fire sprinkler/prevention, and refrigeration-related plumbing systems, to ensure a clean, safe and attractive learning environment. The incumbent in this classification may also provide instruction and lead direction to unskilled and semi-skilled assistants.

The Maintenance & Operations unit of Facilities Development & Operations provides maintenance and operations services to a University campus spread across multiple sites comprised of +150 acres, 81 buildings, and more than six million gross square feet. The Plumbing Shop is one of seven skilled trades shops within Maintenance & Operations and is comprised of a supervising plumber, one lead plumber, three facilities maintenance mechanics, and eight journey-level plumbers. The Shop reports up, through the supervising plumber who provides supervision, oversight, and guidance.

Key Responsibilities

Perform the full range, at a journey level, of skilled plumbing work including installation, maintenance, inspection, modification, remodel and repair of mechanical plumbing equipment and fixtures for water, gas, oil, steam, sewage, fire sprinkler/prevention, and refrigeration-related plumbing systems, including automated plumbing systems.

Maintain, troubleshoot, and test plumbing systems, including backflow prevention devices.

Assemble, install, and repair pumps, pipes, fittings, and fixtures; cut, thread and weld pipes.

Inspect completed work for conformance with specifications, requirements and compliance with applicable building and safety codes and regulations.

Participate in the maintenance and operations of a plumbing shop including cleaning, maintaining, and servicing tools and equipment used in the performance of duties.

Use computerized maintenance management programs and building automation systems to complete work assignments including documentation of efforts but also as necessary to research and understand issues at hand.

Read, interpret and work from blueprints, plans, drawings, and specifications including making rough sketches where needed to facilitate work efforts.

Train and provide work direction to skilled and semi-skilled workers.

Consult, coordinate with, and works with other trade workers, trades shops, and FD&O units, as needed, to successfully complete repair and maintenance work assignments on schedule.

Respond promptly to, and assists with urgent needs in order to prevent injury, damage or further incident.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Thorough knowledge of plumbing theory and the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the plumbing trade for the installation, maintenance, and repair of plumbing apparatuses, equipment, and systems

Base knowledge of the operation of building automation systems

Thorough knowledge of applicable state and federal health and safety orders and regulations pertaining to the plumbing trade, including the California State Safety Orders of the Division of Industrial Safety and the California State Plumbing codes

Ability to perform skilled plumbing work on all applicable equipment and systems

Ability to perform welding work applicable to the plumbing trade

Ability to operate all applicable tools and equipment necessary to perform skilled trade work

Ability to read, interpret and work from blueprints, plans, drawings and specifications

Ability to make rough sketches and to estimate the cost, time and materials of assigned work

Ability to estimate materials and labor cost of standard plumbing maintenance and repair work

Ability to maintain records and retrieve data related to work performed using manual and computerized record-keeping systems, and to prepare standard reports

Ability to provide instruction to unskilled and semi-skilled assistants

Ability to read and write at a level appropriate to the position, and to perform arithmetic calculations as required by the position

Anility to participate in all OSHA required physicals and examinations.

Ability to operate a motor vehicle, utility cart, scissor lift, boom lift, and forklift (as certified) and other equipment and tools required to successfully complete assignments

Required Qualifications

Must possess those abilities normally acquired through any combination of progressively responsible training and experience which demonstrates achievement of journey-level skills equivalent to that acquired through completion of a standard plumber's apprenticeship program. Must participate in all OSHA required physicals and examinations.

License

A valid driver's license is required for this position. Out of state candidates selected for the position must obtain a State of California driver's license within 10 days of hire in accordance with the California Department of Motor Vehicles regulations.

Once hired the employee must successfully complete the Defensive Driver Training Program provided by the State of California for California State University campuses.

Preferred Qualifications

Certification indicating completion of an applicable apprenticeship program in the plumbing trades

Evidence of current certification as a plumber in the State of California

Demonstrated thorough knowledge of the plumbing trade

Experience in the maintenance of a State facility, College or University or other commercial, multi-facility complex

Four years of journey level work experience in the maintenance, repair, or construction of plumbing systems
