Reports to the Water Superintendent. Hiring Range: $24.03 - $26.43 Hourly Rate (Depending on qualifications)Work Days/Hours: Monday - Friday 7:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.; may be required to work emergency water outages and in an on call rotation.Posting Start: 10/24/2024Posting End: 11/07/2024JOB SUMMARYUnder general supervision, this position is responsible for operating a variety of heavy equipment in support of more complex installation, maintenance, and repair of storm water/sewer systems. Reports to the Water Superintendent.ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONSOperates equipment to include backhoes, hydraulic and walking excavators, rubber tire and track loaders, tractor trailer combination, tandem dump trucks with attachments and other heavy equipment to repair and replace storm water/sewer systems.Performs installations on storm water and sewer systems; provides adequate trenching and shoring for excavations of exceptional depth and large-scale pipe replacement projects.Operates and maintains hand and power tools to include hand and motorized tampers, jackhammers, shovels and rakes; reads and interprets blueprints and other technical drawings.Uses heavy equipment to clean drainage pipes, ditches, channels, easements, flumes, under bridges, and creeks within the boundary of the roadway and right-of-way.Ensures the safety of City equipment by following proper safety procedures, watching for overhead utility lines, and checking for traffic and underground utilities.Performs routine checks and preventive maintenance on equipment; identifies and reports equipment malfunctions; documents and records missing equipment and/or needed repairs, and reports to the Water Superintendent.Ensures the inspection of all newly installed water and sewer lines; Prepares work orders and reports.Transports equipment, supplies and materials, including sand, gravel, or rock; performs water and sewer taps; performs laboring activities such as shoveling at job sites.Sets up work zone controls, flags, and directs traffic at repair sites.Adheres to safety rules and to national, state, and local codes.Responds to emergency calls during hurricanes, inclement weather, or other emergency situations, and requires on-call assignment.Performs other related duties as assigned.QualificationsQUALIFICATIONSEducation and Experience:High school diploma or GED; supplemented by 2 - 3 years of work experience in the operation of heavy equipment or an equivalent combination of education and experience. or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.Graduation from a recognized equipment operator apprenticeship program may substitute for one (1) year of experience.Licenses or Certifications:Requires State of Georgia Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL). Class B (CDL) preferred.Completion of a recognized three (3) year apprenticeship program as a Certified Lineman/Linewoman, required.Must have a flagging certification.Special Requirements:Requires an acceptable general background check to include a local and state criminal history check, and a valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.Requires pre-employment medical evaluation and satisfactory results from a pre-employment alcohol and controlled substance testing in accordance DOT federal regulations.The job is considered Essential Personnel and will be required to work during and following natural disasters and emergency situations.This position is deemed safety-sensitive and is subject to random alcohol and controlled substance testing.Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:Knowledge of the extents and limits of the water distribution and sewer collection systems.Knowledge of the effective operation of medium and heavy equipment.Knowledge of water & sewer line construction, maintenance, & repair procedures.Knowledge of the hazards involved in the use of heavy equipment and of the safety precautions to be taken.Knowledge of traffic and highway safety rules and regulations, and of effective precautionary measures necessary to avoid accidents.Knowledge of City and departmental policies and procedures.Skill in the proper use of materials, manual and power tools, methods, and techniques used in construction, maintenance, and repair activities.Skill to operate a personal computer and Microsoft Office software.Skill in oral and written communication.Skill in supervision, prioritizing and organizing work.Skill in the use of hand and power tools.Ability to operate and maintain a variety of equipment.Ability to read water & sewer construction plans.Ability to interact effectively with contractors and builders.Ability to work collaboratively with co-workers and provide effective customer service to the citizens and customers of the City of Fairburn.Ability to understand, follow and give oral and written instructions.Ability to exercise sound judgment within established guidelines.Ability to work in a team-based environment and achieve common goals.PHYSICAL DEMANDSThe work is light work which requires exerting up to 50 pounds of force. Work requires the ability to exert moderate physical effort, typically involving some combination of stooping, kneeling, crouching and crawling, and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight. Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Tasks require the ability to communicate orally.WORK ENVIRONMENTWork is performed in an office and an outdoor environment.
