Excellent, evidence-based and efficient patient care. Effective supervision, teaching, and mentoring of Internal Medicine housestaff and students.

Chief Purpose of this position:

The Division of General Internal Medicine is seeking an Internal Medicine-Pediatrics physician to join an outstanding group of clinician educators in a dedicated Medicine-Pediatrics primary care practice in a suburban satellite location of VCU Health. Physicians at this practice provide comprehensive evidence-based care to a diverse patient population that spans all ages and levels of complexity. In addition to providing outpatient care, this faculty position also allows for significant clinical teaching of Internal Medicine-Pediatrics residents and medical students, if desired by the candidate. The successful candidate will have an interest in developing a career as a superb clinician educator. The Division is well positioned to support a range of clinical and academic interests.

Position Responsibilities:

Teaching:

Supervise and teach housestaff in the resident outpatient practice, if part of desired dutiesSupervise and teach learners (including medical students, interns, and residents) on the inpatient housestaff teaching service, if part of desired dutiesIf working on the inpatient teaching service, conduct daily teaching rounds that use contemporary adult learning methods to promote evidence-based practiceDemonstrate effective teaching skills and continually develop as a teacher for learners at all levelsComplete required evaluations of learners in a timely manner-including but not limited to written and verbal feedbackParticipate in other learning activities such as morning report, core conference, and other formal educational programs for undergraduate and post-graduate learners

Research:

Participate in clinical and educational research, according to skills, interest, and funding (research opportunities may include performance improvement initiatives or formal extramurally funded investigations)

Service:

Work with institutional staff and administration to attain the strategic objectives of VCU Health System, including patient safety, patient and other customer satisfaction, maintenance and enhancement of public perception, and fiscal healthClinical:

Provide direct clinical care to ambulatory adult and pediatric patients in the Internal Medicine-Pediatrics practiceProvide direct clinical care to hospitalized patients, if inpatient work is part of the candidate's desired clinical duties (determined by mutual agreement with Division Chief)Participate in night and weekend on-call duties (telephone call only; no in-hospital responsibilities), shared among Division facultyComply in a timely manner with all institutional policies for professional work, including credentialing, documentation, and billingWork effectively with other members of the extended inter-professional teamRequired Qualifications:

Board certification or eligibility in Internal MedicineDirect experience managing complex inpatientsInterest in teaching and growth in an academic settingInterest in furthering the academic mission of the DivisionExperience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCUDemonstrated ability to provide effective communication, both verbal and written
