SUMMARY

The Pain Physician-Anesthesiologist provides comprehensive interventional pain management and anesthesia services for both inpatient and outpatient care at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC). The role includes diagnosing, treating, and managing acute and chronic pain using advanced interventional techniques such as epidurals, nerve blocks, and spinal cord stimulator trials. The physician will work with a multidisciplinary team to provide holistic care for military personnel, veterans, and their families. Additionally, the physician is responsible for educating residents, medical students, and other healthcare professionals, ensuring the highest quality of care while adhering to military and regulatory standards.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIESInterventional Pain Management: Provide comprehensive pain management services using interventional techniques such as epidural injections, nerve blocks, spinal cord stimulator trials, and other advanced methods to treat chronic and acute pain.Anesthesia Services: Serve as an anesthesiologist, providing care and support for surgical procedures, including preoperative assessments, intraoperative anesthesia, and postoperative pain management.Patient Evaluation and Treatment: Assess patients' pain levels, develop individualized treatment plans, and monitor the effectiveness of interventions. Adjust treatments as necessary based on patient progress and needs.Educational Responsibilities: Provide instruction and mentorship to medical students, residents, and student nurse anesthetists. Lead educational sessions on interventional pain management techniques and contribute to the professional development of the healthcare team.Collaboration and Multidisciplinary Care: Work closely with an interdisciplinary team of healthcare professionals, including pain specialists, physicians, and nurses, to develop and implement comprehensive pain management strategies tailored to each patient.Regulatory Compliance: Ensure that all medical and clinical activities comply with the standards set by the Joint Commission (TJC) and other regulatory agencies. Maintain accurate and detailed patient records to meet both institutional and legal requirements.Telemedicine and Off-Site Services: May provide telemedicine pain services or be assigned to provide pain management care at other military healthcare facilities within the National Capital Region (NCR).Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

Expertise in Interventional Pain Techniques: In-depth knowledge and experience with advanced interventional pain management techniques, including epidural injections, spinal cord stimulator trials, and nerve blocks.Strong Communication Skills: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to educate patients, interact with the interdisciplinary team, and mentor medical students and residents.Problem Solving and Adaptability: Ability to solve complex medical issues and adapt to the evolving needs of patients and the healthcare environment.EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

Doctorate in Medicine (M.D.) from an accredited institution approved by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) and the American Medical Association (AMA).Doctorate in Osteopathy (D.O.) from a college accredited by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA).Permanent Certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) for international medical graduates.Completion of an ACGME-recognized fellowship in pain medicine, with a minimum duration of 12 months.Obtained subspecialty certification in Pain Medicine within two years after completing the fellowship.SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

May supervise healthcare staff, including nurse anesthetists, medical residents, and other members of the care team.

Ability to perform clinical procedures and alternative therapies.

POSITION TYPE/EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK

Full-time, Monday-Friday, 0600-1700. Occasional after-hours duties may be required for educational events or patient care needs.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

Travel required for NCRPI Annual Pain Care Skills Training (up to three days annually).

CLEARANCE/LICENSE REQUIREMENTS

Board certification in anesthesiology by the American Board of Anesthesiology.If certified before January 2000 (indefinite certification), must be enrolled in the Maintenance of Certification in Anesthesiology (MOCA) program and voluntarily recertified.Initial board certification in anesthesiology obtained within two years of graduating from anesthesiology residency.Recertification is required every 10 years as part of a teaching institution.Board-eligible or board-certified in Pain Medicine by the American Board of Anesthesiology.Hold a current, unrestricted medical license to practice medicine in any of the 50 U.S. statesDEA registration is required for prescribing controlled substances.BLS, ACLS, and PALS certifications may be required depending on the work setting.
