The School District Head Nurse serves as a leader and resource person to promote health and safety in the district's schools and to enhance the delivery of health services to students, faculty, and staff, to assist with the teaching of sound health practices. He/she will report to High Principal on nursing and health services issues and will act as a resource person to the administration, teaching staff, assist in program development and coordination between, high, middle, elementary, and alternative schools to coordinate the activities of building based nursing staff members, in cooperation with those building principals.
Required Qualifications:
High School Diploma or GED.BSN and ESA Certification.WSP/FBI fingerprint background clearance.Must hold or have the ability to obtain and maintain a valid First Aid/CPR card.Ability to lift up to 85 lbs. in a two-person lift.Ability to maintain confidentiality.When to refer concerns to a more qualified health care provider.Ability to dispense medication according to state and local policies.Ability to work with a team and communicate with supervisor, administrators, staff, students, and community with tact and diplomacy.Demonstrates the ability to:Utilize effective reading, writing, computation and communication skillsOrganize, problem solve, critically and creatively think, and make decisions.Be flexible, caring, show respect for others, and sense of humor; consciously model the values of trust and integrity and is a positive role model for childrenRegular attendance is an essential function of this positionThe safety and health of students and others is an essential function of this positionDesired Qualifications:
Public health nurse or similar experienceExperience in school setting preferredParticipation in a supervised practicumFamiliarity with principles of child developmentDemonstrated proficiency in writing and oral communication skillsAbility to establish rapport with students, colleagues, and administratorsKnowledge of state codes related to school health servicesUnderstands and promotes positive school climate and culture of ethnically and socially diverse students and parent populationProficiency in the use of technology as a tool for communications and file maintenanceStrong organizational and communication skillsSuccessfully collaborate with students, parents, staff and administrationFollow School Board policies and proceduresEssential Job Functions:
Organize and implement student vision and hearing screening as required by the district/stateMonitor immunization status and records of each child as required by the district/state and inform the principal if students are not in compliance with RCW's.Oversee and/or identify significant deviations from normal developmental growth patterns and physical functions and determine need for referralProvide professional assistance in planning and implementing a coordinated program of temporary care for the ill or injured student, including an adequate system of parent notificationAttend faculty, staff, and in-service meetings as requestedProvide consultation and act as a resource in assisting the district health team in presenting health information to the total school/district, when appropriateRemain current with educational and professional developments and advancements in the health-related fieldsProvided assessment and evaluation of the health developmental status as unique needs of special education students as required by 504 Diabetes Act, and interpret these findings to appropriate school personnelMaintain and manage/504 medical plans.Provide guidelines for health assistant and assist when it is appropriateAssess students and/or classrooms for communicable disease if requested to do so by the building administratorProvide assessment and evaluation of the health and developmental status of students, and refer students with health and physical development problems to the appropriate staffProvide home consultation regarding the special health needs of studentsProvide health counseling to aid students and their families in dealing more effectively with the students' health needsSupervise the maintenance of student health recordsPerform lice checksInfrequently, may accompany a sick or injured person to the hospitalDevelop/implement Individualized Health Care Plans/Emergency Actions Plans with specific goals,nursing interventions and evaluations for medically fragile/special needs childrenEvaluate the effects of medication and health management procedures administered in the school settingIdentify and refer children and families in suspected neglectful and/or abusive situationsProvide consultation and education to staff regarding issues of safety and protection, including blood borne pathogen trainingMust be able to perform the essentials functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodationPerform other duties and responsibilities consistent with district policies and procedures as required
