TITLE : Veterinary Surgeon

DEPARTMENT:

REPORTS TO : Clinic Medical Director

STATUS : Exempt/Non-exempt

GENERAL SUMMARY

The Veterinary Surgeon, under the direction of the Clinic Medical Director, provides surgical services to the animals in the shelter and the public clinic. The veterinary team works together along with Veterinary Technicians, Veterinary Assistants and Clinic Managers in a team effort to provide Best Care for all patients. In-house laboratory equipment, digital dental and full-body radiography, an electrosurgical unit, and dental equipment are some of the tools available. Full-time is available as well as part-time positions with flexible schedules and benefits. The Veterinary Surgeon is not required to work weekends or holidays.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS• Assess public and shelter patients pre-operatively for anesthetic risk.• Perform high quality high volume spay-neuter on shelter and public patients.• Collaborate with the team of veterinarians in determining Best Care for shelter patients including pre-operative assessment, advising on surgical procedures, and managing post-operative care.• Perform dental examinations and extractions on shelter patients.• Perform other soft tissue surgeries and orthopedic surgeries on shelter patients as able.• Conduct continuing education for the clinic and shelter staff.• Contribute to protocols and processes as delegated by the Clinic Medical Director.• In cooperation with the Clinic Medical Director, ensure the smooth functioning of the operation of the clinic.• Attend as needed Anti-Cruelty events.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

Willingness to work with and learn about dogs, cats, and small mammals from a variety of backgrounds with a variety of behavior. Knowledge of management and containment of infectious disease a must. Ability to interact courteously and respectfully with supervisors, fellow employees, volunteers, visitors and general public.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent degree, i.e., Veterinary Medical Doctor (VMD), obtained at a school or college of veterinary medicine accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) Council on Education. Must have a current, valid Illinois veterinary license or the ability to obtain one.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

One year of previous surgical experience as a Veterinarian is required. High-quality high-volume (HQHV) surgical employment preferred, but having had HQHVSN training previous to employment is required.

Note: A comparable combination of education, experience or training that would provide the level of knowledge, skills and ability required may qualify an individual.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Ability to handle work around companion animals.

Ability to remain on feet for long periods of time.

Ability to lift up to 35 pounds.
