Job DutiesA Nurse Practitioner at the East Carolina University Student Health Service is charged with augmenting the primary care physician in making medical diagnoses, dispensing treatment, and providing patient education including self-care and wellness concepts. This is accomplished through thorough patient histories, examinations, diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, evaluation, and interpretation and implementation of patient treatment plans. The Nurse Practitioner will practice independently of the primary supervising physician, consulting and making the backup physician aware of difficult or complex patient problems only when necessary. The Nurse Practitioner will make varied and independent changes of the patient's treatment plan using professional judgment and a mutually agreed upon standard between the Nurse Practitioner and supervising physician. In areas of expertise the Nurse Practitioner will act as a consultant for the medical staff (i.e. gyn, ophthalmology, dermatology, etc.) The Nurse Practitioner will participate in development, implementation and evaluation of quality medical and nursing care provided to the student population. The Nurse Practitioner will initiate communications to coordinate problem solving among medical providers and nursing staff. The Nurse Practitioner will evaluate and make recommendations in relation to unit staffing and will assist in the supervision of nurses and nursing assistants on the individual units. The Nurse Practitioner will participate in the development and presentation of educational programs for the students and staff. The Nurse Practitioner will serve as the primary care provider at the SHS at the Health Science Campus (HSC).

Minimum Education/ExperienceLicensed as a Registered Nurse by the North Carolina Board of Nursing, completion of a Nurse Practitioner program approved by the North Carolina Joint Subcommittee of the Board of Nursing and Board of Medical Examiners, and "approved to practice medical acts" by the Joint Subcommittee.

License or Certification Required by Statute or RegulationState of North Carolina Registered Nursing License

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/EducationExperience in a higher education clinical setting
