The Maine Trust for Local News, part of the National Trust for Local News, is growing and dynamic. We seek an innovative managing editor to lead the Portland Press Herald.
Our ideal candidate is a proven editor who is passionate about impactful journalism and possesses deep knowledge of audiences. This leader also must be adept at communicating,collaborating and leading sophisticated work across platforms.
Key Responsibilities:
Lead and direct a team of editors overseeing news, opinionand culture coverage
Collaborate on editing daily and enterprise stories to produce high-quality journalism
Champion digital storytelling with an emphasis on visuals and alternative formats
Make decisions on news play, including timing for online publication and front-page story selection
Oversee investigative projects, especially those exposing how powerful forces affect the lives of our readers
Collaborate with other METLN newsrooms to coordinate coverage
Manage partnerships with local and national media organizations
Oversee the hiring of staff and interns, prioritizing diversity and professional experience
Engage with readers and the public through live events and coverage feedback
Establish and communicate newsroom standards for story coverage and editing
Provide feedback, consultation, and recognition to newsroom staff
Monitor workflows and story budgets, ensuring efficiency
Direct the timely online posting of breaking news and ensure continuous updates
Stay informed on local, state, national, and international news relevant to Maine readers
Qualifications:
Exceptional writing and editing skills with experience leading local journalism projects.
Outstanding news judgment and proven digital acumen.
Ability to lead and collaborate effectively within the team and across METLN publications.
Strong foundation in data analysis for investigative reporting.
Expertise in media ethics, libel, and privacy laws.
Excellent communication skills and a sense of urgency.
Strong organizational, time management, and problem-solving abilities.
Business acumen, including budgeting and financial understanding
Bachelors degree or equivalent professional experience.
At least seven years of editing and management experience at a reputable daily news organization.
Proven experience in digital media and newsroom leadership.
