What You Will DoWithin the context of a client and family centred model of care and, in accordance with the Mission, Vision and Values, and strategic directions of Providence Health Care, the person promotes a safe, respectful, and civil working environment for patients, residents, families, visitors, and staff.
Reporting to the Clinical Informatics Manager, the Clinical Informatics Specialist is responsible for implementing the PHC direction for development, maintenance, and sustainment of current and future-state health information systems to improve clinical processes. The position bridges the gap between clinical care and technology by meeting with system users to understand workflows, articulate clinical requirements, and lead the business analysis for clinical informatics work design to identify improvements and changes to systems and processes.
The Clinical Informatics Specialist works within Professional Practice, and with related staff and service providers, to adapt, implement, and sustain the PHC strategy to incorporate clinical content into the health information system. Serves as a clinical resource responsible for supporting clinicians towards best practice clinical informatics through advice, counsel, and education to ensure optimal usage and understanding. Provides troubleshooting and support to end-users, monitors, and assists with resolution of incidents, develops and maintains documentation, supports data integrity and standardization activities, and communicates changes to system users. May provide work direction and support to other team members such as Clinical Analysts, Clinical Informatics Analysts, etc. Acts as a liaison with Professional Practice and IMITS on the development of solutions and issue resolution. Participates in project planning and leads and/or participates in internal/external working groups and committees in support of PHC or regional clinical informatics projects.
What You BringCurrent practicing registration as a Registered Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives, or currently practicing registration as a Registered Psychiatric Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives.
Minimum of three (3) to five (5) years’ experience in a health care environment, including extensive experience with related computer technology, clinical informatics, clinical change management, and project leadership. Experience implementing/supporting integrated clinical system environments is an asset.
Travel between sites requires access to a vehicle and a valid BC Driver’s License for which mileage will be reimbursed in accordance with the collective agreement.
Skills and Abilities:
Basic understanding of data, clinical information and how these are operationalized within the Electronic Health Record (EHR) to create knowledge.
Demonstrated knowledge and skill in the provision of evidence-based practice in a clinical setting.
Demonstrated experience with functional requirement assessment.
Maintains a broad knowledge of clinical process, clinical services delivery and patient/client satisfaction determinants across the organizations.
Uses exceptional interpersonal and communication skills to share information and collaborate with a variety of internal and external stakeholders to arrive at the best overall solution.
Ability to develop system implementation and training programs and strategies.
Ability to lead, coach and mentor others.
Uses effective leadership, facilitation, persuasion, and negotiation abilities to achieve consensus, resolve conflict and achieve desired outcomes.
Demonstrated ability to create and execute plans and ensure timelines are met while working with a variety of individuals/groups.
Exercises initiative, self-direction and problem-solving abilities to identify gaps and opportunities for improvement.
Maintains a strong sense of ownership and a results-oriented attitude to continually improve processes, enhance efficiency and contribute to overall clinical and organizational success.

Participates in the development of project plans and related documents to support clinical informatics projects in all phases of the systems development life cycle.
Supports the implementation of computer and communications technologies and clinical change initiatives that enhance evidence-based clinical practices, access to patient/client information and clinical documentation via the Electronic Health Record (EHR).
Disseminates information regarding system changes to end users.
Provides on-site or remote application troubleshooting to a wide variety of end users. Acts as a resource to staff to ensure quality of data and consistent practices.
Monitors the resolution of incidents arising from clinical utilization problems with the relevant applications, practices or procedures by methods such as gathering information from users, identifying trends and communicating with technical support staff, designated program staff and management to assist with the resolution of issues.
May provide work direction and support to other staff such as Clinical Analysts, Clinical Informatics Analysts, etc.
Leads and participates in steering committees and working groups for PHC or regional informatics projects. Assesses and documents options and presents them to clinical and operational leaders for decision-making.
Collaborates with IMITS teams and other departments to support clinical information systems testing.
Identifies user-learning needs and coordinates the development, implementation and evaluation of education tools and programs to meet the learning needs of electronic health information system users.
Assists in developing and implementing consistent interim and permanent solutions to identified informatics issues ensuring continuous quality improvement through regional standardization of clinical documentation. Collaborates with members of the PHSA IMITS department and other organizational programs/departments and partner affiliates related to system wide practice and workflow change initiatives, practice innovation and redesign, documentation/nomenclature standards and the electronic health record.
Participates in error correction/data integrity activities and audit processes to ensure quality data collection and system efficiency.
Acts as a liaison between Professional Practice, IMITS, end users and other stakeholder groups to ensure information technology provides the best opportunities to support clinical practice, education, administration, and research.
Maintains familiarity with health care industry developments in clinical informatics, participates in advising on implementation of related standards, tools, and processes within PHC.
Develops a plan for ongoing professional growth as it relates to clinical informatics.
Carries out responsibilities in accordance with health and safety requirements. Immediately reports unsafe situations by notifying supervisor or other appropriate personnel.
Performs other related duties as required.
