As a Lead Engineer on the Observability Platform team, you will be architecting and scaling the data pipelines for billions of logs, metrics, and traces produced by thousands of workloads spanning multiple public cloud providers and datacenters. You will leverage open standards, open source technologies, and in-house custom software to extend and create new platform features. You will work closely with the SRE team and engage with application teams across the company to inform the direction of the platform as it grows.Successful candidates will combine deep technical acumen with a willingness to collaborate and mentor teammates across teams. A keen understanding of distributed systems and operational thinking will help you excel in the role.Responsibilities for this roleDesign and scale data pipelines for logs, metrics, and tracesParticipate in team on-call rotations to ensure the health and stability of the Observability PlatformEngage with platform customers as they reach out with support questionsCreate comprehensive documentation for observability tools and technologiesWatch the watchers by building and managing instrumentation and alerting for the Observability Platform itselfWork closely with the SRE team to understand application team challenges in the observability space and identify opportunities to improve the Observability Platform to meet these challengesRegularly collaborate with principal engineers, engineering leaders, product managers, and architects across Enterprise Technology to define and deliver on the Observability Platform roadmapREQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS7+ years of experience in software engineering and/or site reliability engineering rolesStrong familiarity with observability patterns and best practices including concepts like SLAs, SLOs, and SLIsExtensive experience with modern infrastructure tooling like Docker, Kubernetes, Argo CD, Envoy/IstioProficiency in programming languages like Go and JavaComfort using the Grafana Labs OSS stack: Loki, Grafana, Tempo, Mimir, et al.Excellent technical communication skillsPREFERRED QUALIFICATIONSUnderstanding of the OpenTelemetry ecosystem, OTLP, and OTel Semantic ConventionsExperience designing and scaling distributed systemsBackground in building and operating high-traffic backend servicesFamiliarity with popular data-oriented open source technologies like Kafka and PostgresEDUCATIONBachelor’s degree or equivalent experience (HS diploma + 4 years relevant experience)Pay RangeThe typical pay range for this role is: $106,605.00 - $206,000.00. This pay range represents the base hourly rate or base annual full-time salary for all positions in the job grade within which this position falls. The actual base salary offer will depend on a variety of factors including experience, education, geography and other relevant factors.
