We are seeking
Senior RF Engineer with HF Radio and Networking experience
to support our US Army client at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland.
Responsibilities:
CommNet is looking for a
Senior RF Engineer with HF Radio (2-30 MHz) and Networking experience to support our
work with a customer on-site at APG, MD. The candidate will take a lead role in running the HF lab, testing interoperability of radios, and working on the Army’s Science and Technology focused efforts to Modernize HF communications. The candidate will be responsible for all networking components within the newly established Human Machine Integrated – Formations (HMI-F) lab. The position will include both field and lab-based testing.
Qualifications and Experience:
Self-starter capable of working with limited direction.
Networking experience in monitoring network performance and troubleshooting routing issues with various communication systems are a plus. Responsibilities include implementation of the Open System Interconnect (OSI) model (Mainly Layer 2 and 3) and ensuring the network meets technical, security, and data standards.
Fluent in running commands via Linux and Windows operating systems.
An understanding of HF propagation, including Near Vertical Incident Skywave (NVIS), Skywave propagation, and familiarity with the variation of the ionosphere both daily and seasonally are a plus.
The ideal candidate will have familiarity with Army radios such as the PRC-150, the ARC-220, and/or the PRC-160, power amplifiers, and HF antennas configured for different propagation effects.
Hands-on experience with test equipment such as the Field Fox, Vector Network Analyzer (VNA), and power meters is required.
A BA or BS degree in Engineering with 5 years’ experience working with HF communications or software-defined radios OR 10 years of experience in working with HF Communications or Software Defined Radios. The ideal candidate would have an MS or PhD.
5 years’ experience working with Army tactical networks is preferred. If preferred experience working with Army tactical networks is not met, the candidate must be willing and able to learn and gain experience with Army tactical networks.
Eligible to obtain a DOD security clearance. Ideal candidate has an active DOD Secret Clearance at the Secret Level. Top Secret clearance is even better.
Additional Qualifications:
The ideal candidate would have one or more of the following:
General to Extra Amateur Radio License in HF Band
Familiarity with Silvus, Trellisware, and Persistent Systems radio protocols.
Knowledge of phased arrays of antennas and beamforming techniques
Experience with amateur radios, including General or Amateur Extra radio licenses in HF bands
Experience with programming radios using L3Harris Communications Planning Application language for radios such as PRC-150, PRC-160, and the like.
Knowledge of 2G and 3G ALE
Experience with propagation prediction software, such as VOACAP
Knowledge of ionospheric diagnostics, such as digisondes, solar conditions, and geomagnetic effects
Knowledge of HF noise models and signal-to-noise path link analysis
Knowledge of HF digital signal processing with an emphasis on MIL STD waveforms and digital modems
Desired: Knowledge of tactical antenna implementations including directional antenna approaches
Desired: Experience with programming and automation scripting in Python or Java
Desired: Experience with Non-Traditional Waveforms such as millimeter wave and Free Space Optics
Desired: Experience with computing performance specifications required for Army tactical networks.
MA, MS, or PhD in Engineering
