Systems Engineer (Cloud Systems)
Position Summary
The Simons Foundation is growing its Cloud Systems Team and looking for an experienced Systems Engineer (or Senior Systems Engineer, depending upon experience) to support current and future projects. The Cloud Systems Team works with many different departments across the organization from Informatics, IT, WebX, Grants, Neuroscience and many varied projects involving data sharing, popular scientific news platforms, and large data collections.
Reporting to the Director, Cloud Infrastructure, this position provides an opportunity to work on a small, efficient team where your contributions will have an immediate impact on day to day tasks and you will have the opportunity to guide the longer term planning and goals of the team.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities
Build and design cloud resources such as virtual machines, elastic container clusters, databases, cloud storage, identity and access management, and code deployment pipelines using AWS and Terraform.
Manage, configure, and troubleshoot Linux servers in a cloud environment.
Load and stress test resources for different use cases on servers and databases.
Configure servers, firewalls, and all software dependencies using Ansible.
Perform backup and restore for servers, cloud storage, and databases.
Work with developers to architect local applications to hosted solutions.
Deploy CI/CD solutions for web and application development.
Perform security audits on server infrastructure, cloud providers, web properties.
Perform log analysis across multiple platforms and create dashboards.
Perform server, application, and network troubleshooting.
Write and maintain documentation for processes and resources.
Scripting using Python and Bash that’s deployed and run in AWS.
Experience working with a ticketing system for issue tracking.
Provide short and long-term infrastructure planning advice.
Minimum Qualifications
B.S., M.S. in computer science, software engineering, or related field.
Experience
At least 3 – 5 years of experience architecting cloud solutions for web applications using Terraform and AWS.
At least 3 years of experience managing databases, MySQL and Postgres.
Experience developing CI workflows on Code Pipeline, Github Actions, or Jenkins.
At least 5 years of Linux administration experience.
Experience working with Git, Github, code reviews, pull requests.
Experience programming in Python and Bash.
Familiarity with TCP/IP networking, route tables, containers, filesystems.
Understanding of web security concepts and MDN (Mozilla Developer Network) best practices.
Related Skills and Other Requirements

Patient, friendly and willing to find reasonable solutions.
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
Ability and desire to learn new technologies.
Handle multiple requests and willingness to help out wherever needed.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
The full-time annual compensation range for the Systems Engineer level is $115,000 – $135,000, depending on experience. The full-time annual compensation range for the Senior Systems Engineer level is $140,000 – $150,000, depending on experience.
