The Utilities Department, Public Works Department - Traffic Engineering Division, and Engineering Department - Transportation Engineering and Design Division (TED) are seeking innovative engineers to join our dynamic team and contribute to projects that focus on all modes of transportation and the improvement of essential utility infrastructure.
Key Qualifications By Division/Department:When assigned to Transportation Engineering:
Creative, persistent, and excited to work within a motivated and talented team focused on innovative solutions for challenging transportation issues.
Knowledgeable in traffic engineering principles and practices with an up-to-date understanding of complete streets design guidelines such as The National Association of City Transportation Officials (NACTO).
Passionate about promoting safe and sustainable transportation improvements for all roadway users.
Experienced in roundabout engineering and design; the City of Modesto is a leader in the State of California for implementing roundabouts.
Knowledgeable in class IV bicycle transportation engineering and design.
When assigned to Utilities Engineering:
Passionate about solution-oriented projects to address challenging obstacles found in the City’s water, wastewater, and storm drain infrastructure.
Knowledgeable in engineering principles, with an up-to-date understanding of the latest developments in design of water, wastewater collection and treatment, and storm drainage design.
Commitment to implementing state-of-the-art solutions to provide safe, clean, and sustainable water supplies.
Experience in pipeline engineering and design; various projects involving pressurized and gravity flow pipes.
Knowledgeable in water tanks, pump stations, and lift stations engineering and design.
When assigned to Traffic Engineering:
Knowledgeable in principles and practices of traffic signal timing.
Familiarity with communications fiber, twisted pair, and wireless technology.
Passionate with an up-to-date understanding of traffic control devices as well as traffic signal design.
Knowledge of Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) California Supplement.
Understanding of the process for establishing speed surveys.
Ability to collaborate effectively with both office staff and field crews.
Thrives on managing multiple projects while also being confident and excited to run meetings.

Prepare and review plans and specifications for the design, construction, and maintenance/operation of public works facilities and projects.
Research project design requirements and perform calculations; conduct plan checks to ensure compliance with standards.
Participate in and prepare engineering studies and reports; coordinate activities with other departments, agencies, and citizens.
Manage a variety of projects simultaneously, from conception through construction.
Conduct site investigations; develop design plans, specifications, and cost estimates for traffic engineering projects.
Prepare and administer federal and state grants.
Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers and the public.
Observe and maintain a safe working environment in compliance with established safety programs.
Marginal Functions
Perform related duties as assigned.
Experience and Training Guidelines:Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience:Four years of increasingly responsible experience equivalent to Assistant Engineer with the City of Modesto.
Training:Equivalent to a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in civil engineering or related field.
License or Certificate:
Possession of a valid California driver's license.
Possession of a valid EIT certificate issued by the State of California Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors.
Possession of a Certificate of Registration as a professional civil or traffic engineer in the State of California.
WORKING CONDITIONSWork is performed in a typical temperature-controlled office environment subject to typical office noise and environment. Some positions may require occasional overtime or weekend work.
