Job Category: EngineeringJob Schedule: Full timeJob Description:The System Protection Engineer is responsible for planning, directing, and coordinating the engineering support for transmission system protection system equipment and disturbance monitoring equipment applied at voltages up to and including 500 kV class. Investigates outages, collects data, and assists with system restoration following disturbances and prepares reports as required. Directs the preparation of protection system coordination studies at periodic intervals and following outages.Note:There is one position available and the position will be filled at one of two job grade levels: Engineer III (System Protection), job grade 9; or Senior Engineer (System Protection), job grade 10. This decision will be based on the qualifications and experience of the candidate selected, and Tri-State business needs at the time of hire.Responsibilities:Review protection system equipment and coordination at new and/or existing substations, and develop protection system settings.Investigate outages, collect data, and assist with system restoration following disturbances and prepare reports as required.Direct the preparation of protection system coordination studies at periodic intervals and following outages.Coordinate the preparation and distribution of present and future system fault current studies.Specify and monitor the use of fault recorders, fault locators, and sequence of event recorders.Provide protection system engineering support to other Tri-State personnel and other utilities.Coordinate, perform, and/or support various studies including electromagnetic transient, motor starting, arc flash, and power quality.Train engineers in system protection, as assigned.Provide field engineering support/assistance for the testing and energization of new and modified substations, as required.Comply with applicable North American Electric Reliability Corporation and Western Electricity Coordinating Council reliability standards and collect and prepare evidence to document functional area-wide compliance.Adhere to and demonstrate compliance with appropriate electric utility industry regulatory requirements.Demonstrate behavior consistent with Tri-State’s culture and core values.Regular, reliable, and predictable performance of the essential functions and responsibilities is an essential function of the job.Ability to work overtime at any time of the day or week is considered an essential function of the job.Qualifications:Education and TrainingBachelor's degree in electrical engineering or related area, power option preferred.Knowledge, Skills, and Ability:Extensive knowledge of relays, testing equipment, computer programs, terminals, and fault recorders.Working knowledge of an interconnected power system.Working knowledge of government regulations, reliability standards, and industry codes affecting electric utilities.Working knowledge of safety policy and procedures.Ability to direct the work of others.Effective oral and written communication skills.Ability to maintain effective working relationships.Willingness to work outside under any conditions, as necessary.Willingness to work around high voltage.Experience:Eight (8) years of progressive experience in related area with electric utility transmission system protection system engineering support experience desired. Those with less experience will be hired at the Engineer III job grade level, as appropriate.Other:Must be able to demonstrate that he/she can perform all of the essential functions of the position. Willingness to travel up to 35% of the time on an annual basis.
