Job Description:
We are seeking a
Physical Substation Design Engineer
to join a top engineering firm in Pennsylvania. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in electrical engineering and experience with the physical design of high-voltage (HV) and extra-high-voltage (EHV) substations. You will be responsible for the development, review, and modification of substation designs, ensuring compliance with industry standards and client requirements.Key Responsibilities:Design the physical layout of HV/EHV substations, including the development of single-line diagrams, wiring diagrams, grounding, and control schematics.Perform detailed engineering calculations, including equipment sizing, electrical clearances, and structural loading.Develop and review design packages, including general arrangement drawings, section views, and bill of materials.Coordinate with project managers, civil, structural, and electrical engineers to ensure all design aspects are integrated effectively.Work with vendors and manufacturers to specify and procure necessary equipment.Ensure designs comply with relevant safety codes, NESC, IEEE standards, and local regulations.Conduct site visits to inspect installations and ensure design conformity during construction and commissioning phases.Provide technical support during project execution, including resolving design issues and responding to RFIs (Requests for Information).Participate in project meetings and collaborate with cross-functional teams to meet project deadlines.Stay current on industry trends, technologies, and best practices in substation design.Required Qualifications:Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) certification is required.3-5 years of experience in physical substation design.Strong understanding of high-voltage electrical equipment (circuit breakers, transformers, switchgear, etc.).Proficiency with AutoCAD, MicroStation, or other relevant design software.Knowledge of power system protection and control schemes.Familiarity with relevant industry codes and standards (IEEE, ANSI, NESC, etc.).Excellent problem-solving and communication skills.Ability to work effectively both independently and in a team environment.
