Description
Under limited supervision, operates sanitation equipment which collects and transports refuse to a designated collection site. This position is responsible for the collection equipment, cleaning and daily inspection of truck, small mechanical repairs and ensuring safe refuse collection.
Examples of Duties
Collects waste and recycling containers from the Refuse & Recycling Center and delivers to proper transfer station or landfill.Conducts and provides daily pre- and post-trip inspection of equipment.Operates heavy equipment when needed, including tractors, large loaders, and forklifts.Handles small mechanical issues, includes oiling and greasing small parts, etc.Provides routine site clean-up.Responds to citizens requests and inquiries.Fills in for employees on leave as needed.Provides assistance for special events (i.e., county fair).Provides assistance with emergency disaster work.Performs supervision of community service workers and work release inmates when required.Maintains pertinent logs records and files.Observes all approved safety and health policies and procedures pertaining to his/her work activities and performs all work tasks in a safe and healthy manner in accordance with County policy.Performs other assigned duties.PHYSICAL DEMANDS:Very heavy work: Exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally and/or in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Requires the use of fingers, balancing, climbing, crouching, grasping, hearing, kneeling, lifting, mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, standing, stooping, talking, visual acuity, and walking.Required Qualifications
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK:High School Diploma or equivalent;Six (6) months of related work experience;Or equivalent training, education, and/or experience.LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS:Commercial Driver's License valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia.Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:Knowledge of safety procedures and Hazmat training;Knowledge of proper cleaning and maintenance methods and procedures;Knowledge of county ordinances, policies, and procedures;Skill in interpersonal relations;Skill in verbal and written communication;Ability to use or repair small/light equipment, such as power tools;Ability to use or repair medium equipment and machinery, such as vehicles; andAbility to establish and maintain effective working relationships and communicate effectively with other employees and the general public.

As such, you are subject to Department of Transportation (DOT) drug and alcohol testing procedures. In accordance with DOT regulations, Isle of Wight County will conduct a fully query of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse to verify your eligibility to perform safety-sensitive functions, such as operation commercial motor vehicles.
