Job AnnouncementThis position works within the Zoning Permits Section, Zoning Administration Division, Department of Planning & Development.

Performs a variety of zoning administration functions to include:Reviews zoning permits to include signs and temporary outdoor uses and activities.Reviews noise waiver requests in coordination with elected officials.Provides zoning comments on building permits and occupancy permits.Provides comments on zoning applications such as special exceptions.Conducts zoning inspections and prepares inspection reports upon request.Periodically serves as zoning resource planner to answer zoning-related questions from the public.Provides verbal and written responses to questions regarding the Zoning Ordinance, as received from the public, county and/or state agencies, or elected officials.Reads and interprets technical documents to include sign permit graphics, site plans, and survey plats.

The salary for this position will not exceed the midpoint of the advertised salary range ($81,676.61). This advertisement may be used to fill multiple positions.

In accordance with current Fairfax County telework and personnel policies, this position is eligible for partial telework. Telework enrollment and continuance are subject to supervisor approval and County policy.Employment StandardsMINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the following:(Click on the aforementioned link to learn how Fairfax County interprets equivalencies for "Any combination, experience, and training equivalent to")Graduation from an accredited, four-year college or university in a planning related field.

BRIDGE CLASS EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS:Four years of increasingly complex technical experience in the assigned functional area, comparable to experience at the Planning Technician II, or higher, level. This class can serve as a bridge class enabling individuals who do not meet the educational or professional experience standards listed above to qualify for this class by possessing four years of increasingly complex technical experience in the assigned functional area, comparable to experience at the Planning Technician II, or higher, level. The purpose of this bridge class is to promote upward mobility within the Fairfax County workforce. However, persons qualifying for this class on the basis of their technical experience may not substitute this technical experience for education, or for professional experience, in order to qualify for other employment opportunities.

CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES REQUIRED:Valid driver's license.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check and driving record check to the satisfaction of the employer.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:Seeking individual with knowledge of the practices of planning and zoning, and professional experience in the review and issuance of planning, zoning, building, and/or related permits. Must be an excellent communicator, with an ability to clearly communicate information orally or in writing to members of the public and other professional staff. Must possess strong interpersonal and public relations skills to work effectively with various staff members in a team setting, citizens, and other customers. Experience using a personal computer, word processing applications, printing and scanning equipment, and Geographical Information System (GIS) based programs or related permitting review and/or government software.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:Position is primarily sedentary; however, employee may be required to do some walking, standing, bending and carrying of items up to 10 pounds in weight. Work requires the ability to operate keyboard-driven equipment and make occasional site visits. Ability to drive a vehicle to sites in order to perform field inspections. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
