Purpose Statement
The school nurse role is essential for the health and safety of students and staff. Primary responsibilities include assessing the health needs of students; developing emergency care plans and individual health plans, working collaboratively parent and/health care provider; complying with the laws relating to student health, including parental and guardian consent and confidentiality; providing appropriate care for ill, medically fragile and/or injured students; providing health information and serving as a resource to teachers, staff, and administrators; and identifying health problems for referral for proper treatment.

FunctionsRefers students requiring additional medical attention for the purpose of providing required follow-up treatment andResearches a variety of topics relating to health and medical care (e.g. wellness, nutrition, treatment protocols, childhood diseases, ) for the purpose of providing information to staff, students, parents, and the public.Responds to emergency medical situations (e.g. severe falls, prescription reactions, bleeding, ) for the purpose of ensuring appropriate immediate medical attention and related follow-up action.Essential Functions
Performs within the scope of the nursing practice act for the purpose of ensuring compliance with legal and medical professional standards andAdministers a variety of medical procedures consistent with authorized certification and medical profession standards for the School Nurse (e.g. first aid, medication and specialized medical treatments, oral suctioning, catheterization, ) for the purpose of providing appropriate care for students.Assesses student health needs and district health service program needs for the purpose of initiating or maintaining student health plans and district-wide health service programs, as well as ensuring compliance with medical and legalCollaborates with parents, students, health care providers, and/or public agencies for the purpose of promoting and/or securing student health services; providing information and complying with legalConducts or schedules training on a variety of health related subjects (e.g. CPR, disaster preparedness, child abuse, health education, medication management, policies and procedures, substance abuse, growth and development, food allergies, STDs, hygiene, ) for the purpose of promoting a healthy lifestyle and/or acting as a resource to students, teachers, and other school personnel.Delegates specific duties and functions to other staff (e.g. medical procedures, reporting functions, ) for the purpose of delivery of the specific procedures or protocols to support student health plan requirements.Provides site assessment (e.g. health issues, student health records, emergency preparedness, ) for the purpose of identifying issues and/or providing recommendations for maintaining and improving the district health programs, including safety and accessibility; and to ensure compliance with medical standards and legal requirements.Initiates health care plans for students identified with health issues, including the need for 504 accommodation plans for the purpose of identifying the health services that will be provided to thoseInstructs students, staff and others (e.g. health education, nutritional workshops, ) for the purpose of supporting established lesson plans and providing age appropriate programs and/or activities in conjunction with the classroom curriculum.Maintains student's confidential files and records (e.g. health care plans, agency referrals, accident reports, ) for the purpose of providing information required by legal requirements and professional standards.Monitors students referred for illness and/or injury for the purpose of attending to their immediate health care concerns and initiating follow-upParticipates in a variety of meetings, workshops and seminars, and interdisciplinary teams for the purpose of gathering, conveying and/or sharing information on students health needs, service delivery, and educational programs; and/or improving skills andPerforms health screenings for students (e.g. vision, dental, hearing) for the purpose of assessing health problems and/or providing appropriate care forReceives communications and information for the purpose of creating awareness of student health care needs and/or reviewing student health information to assist with developing, modifying or maintaining student healthReports health and safety issues to assigned administrator and appropriate agencies (e.g. fights, suspected child or substance abuse, contagious diseases, ) for the purpose of maintaining students' personal safety, a positive learning environment and complying with regulatory requirements and established guidelines.Supervises other staff with health room responsibilities or other health-related functions for the purpose of ensuring the appropriate delegation of medical/health program duties consistent with state law and health profession standards and to carry out the specific requirements of the student health plans and district health servicesResponsibility
Responsibilities include: working under limited supervision following standardized practices and/or methods; directing other persons within a small work unit; and operating within a defined budget. Utilization of resources from other work units may be required to perform the job's functions. There is a continual opportunity to significantly impact the organization's services.

May occasionally deal with distraught or difficult students or parents.PHYSICAL DEMANDSAmount of standing, sitting, walking, bending, and twisting will vary depending on the age of students and classroomassignments. Physical capabilities also require lifting and carrying (no more than 50 lbs.) pushing and/or pulling,stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, twisting, and significant finger dexterity. Generally, the job requiresapproximately 35% sitting, 35% walking, and 30% standing.
