The Department of Psychiatry at Iowa Health Care is seeking a PA/ARNP Hospitalist to care for hospitalized and ambulatory patients in an Adult Psychiatric inpatient setting. Focus will be on providing coordinated care for the adult population across the health care continuum, including psychiatric evaluation and treatment, ongoing education and consultation to patients and their care providers to maximize community capacity in the outpatient setting, managing length of stay, improving resource utilization, and decreasing costs to patients and the institution while providing personalized care of psychiatric patients. Qualified candidates are eligible for a sign-on bonus up to $10,000. Internal candidates are not eligible for sign-on bonus.

This position

may be eligible for a relocation allowance.

Health information technology, including video teleconferencing, will enhance care transitions and continuity of care. The PA/ARNP hospitalist will collaborate/consult in the optimization of care delivery through coordination and transitions of care as a part of a team. Will use judgment to provide continuity of care incorporating best practices. This position may require weekend, holiday and night coverage responsibilities as clinically indicated.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities

Assure clinical competency and expertise in area of specialization.Function independently and/or as a member of an interdisciplinary team to plan, deliver and evaluate health care for the adult patient population.Instruct and counsel patients regarding physical and mental health on matters such as diets, disease prevention, health promotion, therapy, and normal growth and development.Discuss testing and treatment options and the associated risks, benefits and limitations with patients and families to assist them in making informed decisions.Evaluate, treat, and institute procedures essential to providing an appropriate response to emergency medical situations.Collaborate inter-professionally to monitor and evaluate the quality of patient care.Promote health maintenance that spans the continuum of health from outpatient to inpatient settings and back to the home care arena.Order and interpret laboratory tests, imagining studies and other related studies.Order diets, physical therapy, inhalation therapy, or other rehabilitative services.Prescribe and administer medications.Provide anticipatory guidance and counseling to patients/families.Document medical history, physical examination, patient assessment and plan of care in the medical record and generate appropriate health reports for outgoing correspondence.Initiate and coordinate referrals to other health care team members or agencies.Serve in a consultative resource capacity by providing expert knowledge and behavioral skills that impact clinical practice and patient outcomes.Maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, students, and the public.Participate in educating fellows, residents, and other students in health sciences.Develop, assist with and/or participate in clinical research and incorporate research findings into practice.Serve in a consultative resource capacity by providing expert knowledge in the field of Psychiatry.Participate in the UIHC PA/ARNP Hospitalist Council and professional activities in the department, hospital, community, and professional organizations.Responsible for administrative activities and special projects as assigned.

Supervision

Clinical practice oversight is received from the Clinical Director and/or Medical Director and through a collaborative practice agreement with direct supervision APP Lead Supervisor.

Qualifications

Education, Licensing, and Certification Requirements

Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioners

Must comply with registration and licensure requirements as specified by the Iowa Board of Nursing which includes graduation from an accredited Master's or Doctorate level nursing educational program and certification by an accepted accrediting agency.

Current license to practice nursing in Iowa.

Licensed in the state of Iowa as an ARNP - Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) is required by time of hire.

Physician Assistants

Must comply with registration and licensure requirements as specified by the Iowa Board of Physician Assistant Examiners which include graduation from an accredited PA educational program and certification by the NCCPA.

Licensure by the Iowa Board of Physician Assistant Examiners which include graduation from an accredited PA educational program and/or certification by the NCCPA.

Required Qualifications

PMHNP applicants - Minimum of 3 years nursing care experience of adults with mental illness of which one year must be post-graduate degree experience

PA applicants - 2 years of post-graduate experience in a psychiatry setting

Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Demonstrated ability to work independently, as well as in a group or team setting

Demonstrated experience collaborating as part of multi-disciplinary care teams

Demonstrated job-related experience with and/or commitment to diversity in the work environment

Desirable Qualifications

Experience with telemedicine.

Experience with emergency psychiatric assessment

Experience with the Iowa mental health commitment process

Experience providing psychiatric triage/ acute case management services

Knowledge of community resources

PA applicants - Fellowship/residency training in Psychiatry is highly desired
