Position SummaryColumbia University Libraries is currently seeking applicants for the position of Bibliographic Assistant VI in the Preservation Division. Established in 1974 with responsibility for preserving Columbia University Libraries' collections in all formats and genres, the Preservation Division provides a comprehensive program to prolong the existence and accessibility of the collections for current and future students and scholars. The Division coordinates with other units in the Libraries to ensure the preservation of all Libraries' content.Under the direction of the Assistant Director for Preservation Reformatting and Metadata, the incumbent will perform a variety of tasks such as handling rare and valuable materials, as well as confidential financial records of patrons and faculty members.Tests:
A Photoshop test and a metadata creation test will be given on the day of the final interview.Requirement:
A cover letter must be submitted with your resume to be considered for this position.ResponsibilitiesMaintain reprography workflow, including accepting orders from library staff and patrons by email, phone, and in person. Prepare, prioritize, and organize orders, forms, and related correspondence. Advise customers about digital products, including file formats, specifications, permissions and copyright etc.Create and enhance metadata for patron orders following library standards and best practices. Prepare files and metadata and perform regular batch uploads to the CMS.Perform physical preparation of materials, including rare and fragile items; pick up and deliver materials.Complete clerical and bibliographic tasks associated with preservation photocopy workflows (print facsimile reproductions), including receiving, processing and sending materials to and from vendor and from owning library, deriving new records on OCLC, and completing QC of returning products.Order supplies and complete other clerical duties.
Minimum QualificationsHigh school diploma and/or its equivalent and one year of relevant experience are required.Experience with image editing (Photoshop preferred) and spreadsheet programs (Excel or equivalent).Experience using metadata schemas and standards.Experience with bibliographic databases.Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.Technically proficient and ability to learn new digital tools quickly.Ability to handle fragile materials with care.Attention to detail.Ability to work independently and to maintain production levels.
Preferred QualificationsSome college.Experience working in libraries.Familiarity with OCLC Connexion and cataloging standards and practices.Experience using OpenRefine.Experience working with a CMS.Knowledge of imaging standards and best practices in a library setting.Experience with command line operations.
