Role and Responsibilities / Essential Job Functions:Follow safety rules as students board and exit busses or cross streets near bus stops.Comply with traffic regulations to operate vehicles in a safe and courteous mannerCheck the condition of a vehicle's tires, brakes, windshield wipers, lights, oil, fuel, water, and safety equipment to ensure that everything is in working orderMaintain order among pupils during trips to ensure safetyReport any bus malfunctions or needed repairsPick up and drop off students at regularly scheduled neighborhood locations following strict time schedulesMaintain knowledge of first-aid proceduresPrepare and submit reports that may include the number of passengers or trips, hours worked, mileage, or fuel consumptionRead maps and follow written and verbal geographic directionsDrive gasoline- or diesel-powered multi-passenger vehicles to transport students between neighborhoods, schools, and school activitiesRegulate heating, lighting, and ventilation systems for passenger comfortKeep bus interiors clean for passengersReport delays, accidents, or other traffic and transportation situations, using telephones or mobile two-way radiosPerform other duties as assigned appropriate to position
Qualifications and Education Requirements:Current and valid CDL Class B license for State of Illinois with Passenger, School Permit, Air Brake EndorsementPass required physical and vision testingWorking Conditions / Environment:
Requires repetitive movementUse of hands to handle, control, and feel objects, tools, or controlsDaily face-to-face contact with students, parents, staff, and supervisorsPhysical Demands including walk, bend, twist at neck and trunk, squat, stoop, reach forward, climb in and out of vehicles with steps, lift up to 25 pounds from floor to 30 inches, visual acuity close/distance/depth perception, hearing to receive information, verbal to exchange informationOther duties as assigned and appropriate to the position
Environmental Conditions: Work done within a closed vehicle and outdoors throughout the year Exposure to sound and noise levels that may be considered distractingExamples of Equipment/Supplies Used to Perform Tasks: Vehicle doors including van and bus, powered service doors, emergency medical/first aid kits, emergency vehicle exits/exit doors, and radio and/or phone communication devices
