This position is used by Labor and Delivery Department only. This position is responsible for a variety of functions during the Labor and Delivery admission process. The incumbent completes patient interviews in order to accurately identify patients, collect demographics and insurance information. The position routinely works with clinicians and physicians. This position is not responsible for providing care to patients.

Responsibilities
Interviews patients to obtain correct patient identification, demographic information, and revenue cycle activities in accordance with hospital policies and procedures while completing, correcting and updating patient registration according to state and federal regulations; including assuring the accurate admission class.
Completes basic compliance counseling with patients during registration, including discussion of HIPAA and Important Message from Medicare and Medicare coverage, including part D.
Admits/Discharges/Transfers function per unit standard.
Schedules, registers and arrives appointments for various ancillary services.
Completes reports and work queues as assigned.
Provides communication to clinicians, hospital staff, patients, families and visitors to provide an exceptional patient experience at University of Utah Health.
Locates physicians for nursing staff and contacts physicians to communicate appropriate patient care information.
Maintains and transfers current information to patient records, nurse charts, patient assignment list and other unit activity boards.
Processes paperwork to collect/comply/retrieve patient records such as prenatal records, test and lab results.
Monitors/secures unit entry.
Orders, stocks and maintains clerical and patient supplies.
Assists in transporting patients.
Assists in orienting new employees regarding the clerical functions of the unit and updates health unit coordinator's reference manual as needed.
Knowledge / Skills / Abilities
Demonstrated ability to use a multi-line phone system and utilize the hospital paging system.
Demonstrated ability to prioritize and manage a large workload in stressful situations.
Demonstrated critical thinking, human relations and verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to quickly navigate through various hospital software applications.
Demonstrated customer service skills.
Ability to discuss financial and insurance issues with patients and request payment when appropriate.
Qualifications
Qualifications Required
18 months of experience in a health care setting, or equivalency.
Qualifications (Preferred)
Preferred
Basic Life Support Health Care Provider card through American Heart Association or obtain within one month of hire may be required.
Completion of a Medical Terminology course.
Working Conditions and Physical Demands
Employee must be able to meet the following requirements with or without an accommodation.
This is a sedentary position that may exert up to 10 pounds and may lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects. This position involves sitting most of the time and is not exposed to adverse environmental conditions.
