What You Will Do
Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is seeking a highly motivated post-doctoral candidate in the area of
Discovery of materials, with an emphasis on using machine learning tools coupled with a fundamental knowledge regarding materials (especially metals) and property dependence on microstructure including chemistry. A successful applicant will have experience with processing of materials using both conventional and advanced manufacturing techniques along with a strong background/interest in automation of these processes using robotics. This position is focused on developing automated laboratories to accelerate data collection for machine learning. A working knowledge of various machine learning tools will also be desirable. A successful applicant will be expected to work well in a team environment.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:Hands-on laboratory experience with using an arc-melter or advanced manufacturing equipment (e.g. EOS).Hands-on experience with characterization of materials using techniques like optical, electron back scattered imaging (EBSD).Fundamental knowledge of structure-property relationships in materials.Demonstrated problem solving and out-of-the box thinking to overcome technical hurdles.Code development experience.Proficiency in Fortran, C, C++, or Python.Excellent written and communications skills.Education/Experience:
A Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Solid Mechanics or related fields is required. The candidate must be within 5 years of completion of Ph.D. at time of being proposed for review by the committee or will have completed all Ph.D. requirements by commencement of the appointment.
Desired Qualifications:Knowledge and experience with machine learning techniques.Experience with using robotics.Proficiency using Advanced characterization techniques like Transmission electron microscopy (TEM).Location
This position will be physically located in Los Alamos, NM.
Salary:
Competitive salaries are based on the date the PhD degree requirements were completed or the degree was awarded. Starting salary for a new graduate is currently $94,500.
