Digital Payments is a very large opportunity for Amazon. Growing at 12% YoY, it is estimated that e-commerce spend will exceed $15T in 2027. And digital wallet usage will constitute more than 50% of e-commerce spend by 2025. Amazon Pay (APay) is our product in this space, and we feel we can provide compelling customer experience. There are unmet merchant and customer needs that we are best positioned to address – merchants need increased conversion, sales, and profits. Buyers want consistent access to payment methods they’d like to use, and better financing.
Amazon Payments in Japan (JPP) manages payments for the JP Stores business through payment acceptance, COP, and the paying customer experience for both credit cards and non-card payments. The payment instruments include all Amazon branded payment products, such as the co-branded Credit Cards (CBCC), Shop with Points (SWP), and the suite of Gift Cards (GC). JPP is a portfolio of services with very successful merchant and marketplace integrations.
We have, and are building, the primitives across Amazon Payments to address these needs better for our customers. For merchants, our plan is to build a no-friction, competitively priced APay, which enables industry leading conversion lift with Alternate Payment Methods (APM) and Buy with Prime (BwP). For buyers, we are building Amazon proprietary payment methods (Amazon Store Card, Amazon Gift Card), and industry leading installment rates. In JP, we are focused on increasing eWallet usage in line with the JP government drive to achieve their 40% cashless vision by 2025, provide a full suite of payment and financial services, drive awareness and adoption of Installments/Buy-Now-Pay-Later (BNPL) to drive affordability for customers, and expand the options for Shop with Points (SwP).
As the Principal SDE for JPP and APay, you will play a pivotal role in shaping and enhancing our payment systems to deliver an unparalleled personalized and rewarding experience for our customers. As a member of the APay International leadership team (API LT), you will contribute innovative ideas and refine our strategic direction. Your responsibilities will span from fostering strong partnerships with cross-functional teams across Amazon to envisioning and owning the long-term architecture for JPP and APay. You will be the champion and bridge in taking the learning and successes in JPP, and delivering them to other regions.
Key job responsibilities
The PE will play a key role in building a public policy and influencing the program with the aim of helping create a unified, government-backed digital payment system in Japan, to offer a secure, instant, and accessible platform for transferring money across all banking institutions, enhancing financial inclusivity and efficiency nationwide. This is inspired by what APay India has been doing with UPI.
The PE would also deliver new innovation for the current JPP portfolio of services (such as e-wallet, installments, and Shop with Points) to simplify the overall work needed to launch new partners, deprecate existing payment methods (such as COD, which we expect to lose adoption in coming years, reflecting customer behavior change), and lead innovation initiatives to explore our 1P e-Wallet vs. 3P where we still need concept generation and brainstorming. The PE would provide the technical expertise and contribute ideas and insights to develop PRFAQs to introduce 1P e-Wallet product in JP, break-through innovation in CBCC penetration, branded e-Wallet, world-class customer experience for installments, and for driving new innovation related to points & rewards with SwP.
The PE would work with leaders across the Payments team to review the proposals and to seek incremental investments. The PE would dig deeper to understand the new regulations (such as Instant Payments Regulation, and Open Banking in the EU), identify the implications, and opportunities to innovate and build new products for our customers.
