Description:This position provides strategic leadership and planning of the Museum’s Visitor Services team, alongside the Museum’s mission and strategic goals. The position is responsible for managing Visitor Services operations at Morrill Hall (University of Nebraska State Museum) to include admissions, gift shop, K12 visits, and private event rental. The Visitor Services Manager provides strategic input to the operations of the museum, including assisting with the development of sales plans. This person manages, hires, trains, and schedules staff (including students) to operate front desk admissions and gift shop. The position will be responsible for managing inventory and other related activities such as sourcing and ordering merchandise, sales/promotions, cash management, PCI compliance, processing deposits, and providing customer service. This position will also be responsible for overseeing staff who manage K12 visits and private event rentals. This requires ensuring University policies and procedures are implemented and working with Museum Communications to promote these rental opportunities. The Visitor Services Manager will be responsible for creating and implementing visitor amenities (such as birthday parties, visitor scavenger hunts) to complement other museum programming. Participation in special events and activities will also be required. This position will be responsible for the development of the Visitor Services budget, as well as planning and tracking expenditure.
The Visitor Services Manager contributes to effective communication and coordination among museum departments, which is central to the Museum’s success. As one of the most public faces of the museum, it is essential that the person in this role has strong communication and customer service skills. The Visitor Services Manager should be well-organized and be able to build and maintain solid relationships with visitors, members, partner organizations, faculty, and staff.

Qualifications:Associate’s or equivalent education/experience in a relevant field plus two (2) years experience delivering customer service in a face-to-face environment; assessing inventory in a retail setting; making recommendations for retail improvements and inventory management; cash handling; point of sale usage, including the creation of reports; training and overseeing staff. Competency in Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat, and database entry/management. Knowledge of best practices for customer service and demonstrated experience working with diverse populations. Excellent interpersonal skills.
Preferred qualifications:Bachelor’s or equivalent education/experience in a relevant field. Supervisory experience: recruiting, training, and managing staff, including students. Experience in merchandising in a retail environment. Experience organizing public events or activities. Writing policies, procedures, and/or training manuals or other resource materials. Management experience working within a non-profit setting. Knowledge of museum trends and demonstrated ability to manage students in a museum, science center, zoo or aquarium environment (or similar non-profit institution). Knowledge of retail operations in a museum/non-profit. Demonstrated ability to contribute to the strategic direction of an operation or organization.
