Description
The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) is seeking a DATA GOVERNANCE MANAGER-ENT to serve as operational manager of data governance functions. Works with university leaders and department leaders to assist in directing enterprise data governance activities. Identifies technology to drive and implement data governance practices. Co-authors and manages business glossaries, standards and definitions, policies, and processes across all data domains. May develop and hold workshops and trainings related to data governance for stewards, trusted designees, data analysts, and data consumers. Researches and recommends best practices in data governance processes and policies in higher education.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Works with leadership, UAB IT department, and enterprise management in support of data governance functions and operations.
Works with stakeholders to support the development, implementation, and management of the data governance roadmap and its initiatives.
Develops and launches an enterprise-wide data governance framework, focusing on improvement of data access, definitions, protection, and use to support achieving the strategic, academic, and business unit planned outcomes.
Manages ongoing adaptation and improvements of the framework according to the changing landscape when applicable.
Enhances and defines additional roles and responsibilities for data governance to ensure clear accountability and responsibility when the UAB data community manages and works with data and information assets.
Facilitates the creation of governance committees and coordinates meetings of committees including, but not limited to scheduling meetings, creating meeting agendas, documenting action items and decisions, and other relevant outcomes from the meeting.
Works with organizational units to implement sound data governance strategies and practices.
Develops and reports on metrics for data governance.
Works with various business units to manage the operational functions of data governance.
Collects, develops, and continuously updates data governance and use procedures, data glossaries, and definitions.
Works with operational areas to collaboratively develop and maintain an inventory of university data glossaries, dictionaries, and catalogs. Makes recommendations to consolidate and streamline these artifacts.
Creates and manages a repository to store data governance documents for campus user access.
Works with IT Governance and Enterprise Information Security to develop procedures to maintain an updated contact list of data stewards, trusted designees, and other pertinent points of contacts and publish to a central location for use by the UAB community.
Uses designated technology and applications to facilitate workflows for data requests and maintenance of associated document libraries.
May serve as administrator or primary use SME for applications as needed.
Works with data governance leadership to support the development and growth of a community of practice for data governance, literacy, and use.
Develops and maintains channels to interact with the UAB community to facilitate collaboration and knowledge sharing.
Develops workshops or facilitates vendor workshops to ensure there is a foundation of data literacy for the UAB data community.
Collects data challenges and opportunities from the UAB community to facilitate co-authoring solutions with the business units, CDO, and IT leadership.
Develops expertise in the availability and contents of University data resources and leverages such expertise to provide procedures for access and sharing of data and the monitoring and improving of data quality.
Works with IT to develop procedures for data practitioners to access data. Guides practitioners in understanding and fulfilling the requirements to access data.
Provides data content expertise to the enterprise data community and others to enhance a self-service data reporting and data sharing portal.
Facilitates the development and implementation of data quality standards and adoption requirements across the enterprise.
Defines indicators of performance and quality metrics.
Ensures compliance with data-related policies, standards, roles and responsibilities, and adoption requirements.
Performs other duties as assigned.
(Annual Salary: $89,880 - $146,055)
Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree in Information Systems or a related field and five (5) years of related experience.
Preferred Skills:
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
Solid writing ability and organizational skills.
Excellent analytical, decision making and problem-solving skills.
Strong computer skills with experience using data-related software like Excel, Power BI, Tableau, or other analogous software.
Experience with data governance software is a plus.
