Performs highly complex (senior-level) forensic science management work. Supports the technical operations of the laboratory. Work involves assisting the Technical Leader with overseeing crime laboratory work, tests, analysis, and identification of physical evidence or database samples; interpreting analytical results; developing and instructing staff on new techniques and procedures; preparing technical reports and records; and testifying as an expert witness. Supervises the work of others. Works under limited supervision, with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.ESSENTIAL DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES:Performs method development and validation studies on instruments and equipment including technical software.Reviews validation studies and procedures currently in use by the laboratory.Monitors the quality assurance program and/or performs quality assurance duties as assigned.Trains on each technology utilized in the lab unless previously qualified.May assist with creating or updating training programs including review of training records and transcripts.Completes FBI sponsored auditor training and maintains training going forward. (DNA only)May review outsourcing contracts, audit documents, procedures, and corrective actions.Serves as primary technical point of contact for all casework questions.Serves as acting Technical Leader as needed following training.May serve as a local CODIS administrator. (DNA only)Completes proficiency testing and maintains a forensic analyst license including obtaining required continuing education; maintains knowledge of latest scientific developments in forensic analysis.Attend work regularly and observe approved work hours in accordance with agency leave and attendance policies.Perform other duties as assigned.GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS and REQUIREMENTS:Education:
Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a Master’s level degree in Biology, Chemistry or Forensic Science related area, and successfully completed twelve (12) semester (or equivalent) credit hours covering the following subject areas: Biochemistry, Genetics, Molecular Biology, and Statistics or Population Genetics (at least three (3) credit hours must be at the graduate level).*Forensic Science programs must be either FEPAC-accredited OR meet the minimum curriculum requirements pertaining to natural science core courses and specialized science courses set forth in the FEPAC Accreditation Standards.Experience:
Minimum of three (3) years of progressively complex work experience in a forensic laboratory in the field of DNA Analysis which should include a minimum of three (3) years’ experience (current or previous) as a qualified analyst conducting and/or directing analysis of forensic samples, interpreting DNA data, reaching conclusions on DNA data, and generating DNA reports. Experience with validation studies is preferred.Licensure and/or Certification:
Must be able to obtain a forensic analyst license from the Texas Forensic Science Commission. Must possess a valid driver license from state of residence.Regulatory Knowledge:
Working knowledge of, or the ability to rapidly assimilate information related to TXDPS, State and Federal regulations, legislation, guidelines, policies and procedures.Technology:
Proficiency with Microsoft Office and appropriate levels of proficiency with utilized software and systems (e.g. CAPPS, SharePoint) and be able to learn new software/systems.Interpersonal Skills:
