Minimum Qualifications To be eligible for the Motor Vehicle Representative 1, G-9 position you must meet one of the following conditions as detailed below:NY HELPS*:Graduated from high school or have earned a high school equivalency diploma AND you must have either1: one year of experience in a position where your primary responsibility was providing customer service** to the general public*** either in an environment with substantial face-to-face interaction or in a call center environmentOR2: 30 college semester credit hoursTransfer:One year of permanent, contingent-permanent, or 55b/c service allocated to a G-7 or higher eligible for transfer under Section 52.6 or Section 70.1 of Civil Service Law, or currently serving in the title and eligible for reassignment.Reinstatement:If you previously served in this title or in a title otherwise transferable to this title, you may be considered for reinstatement pursuant to Civil Service Law, if it is in the best interest of the agency. If you left state service more than one year ago, the reinstatement must also be approved by the Civil Service Commission. All reinstatements must serve a mandatory 52-week probation period.55b/c Appointment:This position is eligible for 55b/c designation and candidates with 55b/c eligibility are encouraged to apply. Candidates must meet the minimum qualifications stated above and must submit their current 55b/c eligibility letter along with their application.*This title is part of the New York Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS). For the duration the NY HELPS Program, this title may be filled via a non-competitive appointment, which means NO EXAMINATION IS REQUIRED, but all candidates must meet the minimum qualifications of the title for which they apply.At a future date (within one year of permanent appointment), it is expected employees hired under NY HELPS will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status, WITHOUT HAVING TO TAKE A CIVIL SERVICE TEST. Employees will then be afforded with all of the same rights and privileges of competitive class employees of New York State. While serving permanently in a NY HELPS title, employees may take part in any promotion examination for which they are qualified.**Civil Service defines customer service is defined as dealing with many different individuals on a continuous basis where verbal communication is the primary means of accomplishing the duties of the position.***Civil Service defines the general public as a broad range of people NOT limited to a specific group of the public.
Duties Description As a Motor Vehicle Representative or Motor Vehicle Representative (Various Language Parenthetics), you would have substantial in-person or telephone contact with members of the public seeking services or information regarding licenses, registrations, identification, testing, insurance, penalties, hearings, and related agency programs. You will be expected to effectively use a computer with multiple applications running simultaneously. You may be required to operate telecommunication consoles, cameras, a cash drawer, photocopiers, fax machines, scanners, calculators, etc. You may be responsible for processing customer payments such as: cash, checks, credit card charges, and inventories of documents, license plates, registration stickers, and other security items. In an issuing office setting, the majority of your time will be spent assisting the public by greeting the public as they arrive in the office as well as in processing complex and varied transactions by entering data on a personal computer using a keyboard and mouse, and/or providing detailed information to large numbers of people. If assigned to a call center, you would wear a headset and would be expected to effectively answer telephone calls which are automatically and continuously distributed by a complex telephonic system. Telephone calls may be monitored for quality assurance. As with many jobs interacting with the general public, you may encounter uncooperative or sometimes hostile individuals. You would be expected to act in a calm, courteous, and reasonable manner even under very difficult, highly stressful, and at times, confrontational circumstances.
