TITLE: School Nurse
REPORTS TO: Office of the Superintendent
JOB GOAL
To maximize each student's potential to learn and grow by providing the best possible health and nursing care; to identify specific health problems; to educate, intervene and encourage proper medical information; and to interpret medical data to facilitate the educational needs of the students in the district
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY None
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES• Conducts a thorough physical assessment (including visual acuity, auditory acuity, otoscopic examination, scoliosis screening, blood pressure, height and weight, etc.) on students to identify any health problems which interfere with educational testing and/or performance• Provides follow-up and referral data as needed by obtaining resources, making apointments, and gathering necessary medical information on specified students• Assumes responsibility for monitoring, identifying and providing information pertaining to contagious, social, nuisance disease or other specific health problems which interfere with a student's education performance and well being• Acts as a resource person and a liaison between school faculty and the medical community by responding to questions and inquiries, obtaining proper release forms, gathering and interpreting medical data necessary to assess student health concerns• Provides first aid to students when appropriate and in-house and provide instruction for first aid to district personnel• Provides first aid at local Special Olympics• Provides health counseling for students, school personnel, and parents on subjects such as chronic illness, nutrition, disease prevention, and positive health lifestyles• Serves as a liaison for recording and reporting child abuse to appropriate departments of social services• Provides staff development to school personnel and conducts related classroom presentations to minimize health problems in the school community• Participates in continuing education related to the field of health and nursing to promote and improve health services for all students and personnel in the district• Establishes a network program with other nurses to exchange ideas and share information to promote and improve health services• Conducts an educational program for school personnel, students, and parents on recognition, treatment, and control of pediculosis as needed• Conducts and educational program for alt fifth grade girls on menstruation upon permission of parent or guardian• Provides vision screening for all students in grades one and four and any other student on a teacher/ parent referral basis. Provides follow-up and referral information when appropriate• Records and submits accurate assessment data reports related to implementation of physical assessment on specified students
QUALIFICATIONS
Current Mississippi Nursing License
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Registered nurse;B.S. in Nursing preferred
