Job Description
The
Advanced Practice Respiratory Therapist
reflects the mission, vision, and values of NM, adheres to the organization's Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines and all other regulatory and accreditation standards.
Responsibilities:Performs selected special procedures to patients that require complex respiratory intervention and monitoring.Utilizes appropriate patient assessment and triaging practices and applies advanced clinical and technical skills.Provides all modes of respiratory care and is certified to perform procedures over multiple service divisions.Performs all functions of a Respiratory Therapist -- RRT; see job class #9417.Implements special clinical procedures within one of the following specialty areas: Medical ICU; Coronary Care Unit/Surgical ICU; Cardio-Thoracic ICU; Neuro-Spine ICU; General Floor Units; Neonatal ICU; Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago; Blood Gas-POC; Emergency Room/Recovery Room involving highly technical equipment management requiring understanding and functional knowledge of complex physiologic processes and interpretation of data.Administers respiratory therapy primarily within a defined specialty area, but is also proficient in multiple clinical specialty areas.Consults with physicians, nurses and other health care professionals and participates in daily patient rounds for assigned specialty area to promote consistent quality and delivery of patient care.Assists Clinical Specialist in providing orientation, technical/clinical direction and guidance to staff upon hire and on an ongoing basis to insure standards of high quality are achieved and maintained in the delivery of patient care and compliance with policies, procedures and clinical protocols.In the absence of the Clinical Specialist, effectively assumes his/her responsibilities to carry through the operations within the assigned specialty area.Administration of Work:
Provides direct patient care for a minimum of 80% of hours worked; for direct patient care responsibilities, see job class # 9417.Participates in departmental education programs and functions as a preceptor for respiratory therapy students and new employees.Follows up with manager on status of equipment evaluations and active research projects.Assists with ongoing clinical research projects.
Leadership/Supervisory Skills:
Oversees RRT's within the specialty areas in the performance of specific duties.Teaches specific clinical skills to staff/students and serves as a professional role model.Assists Clinical Specialist in orientation to staff/students and other health professionals to department, patient care floors and policies.Assist Clinical Specialist in review and revision of existing programs and policies and procedural manuals.Assesses peer performance and provides feedback to Clinical Specialist and/or Resource Coordinator regarding the need for clinical mentoring and/or additional orientation/training.
Communications/Relationships:
Reports daily operational issues of the specialty area to the Resource Coordinator.Participates in interdisciplinary rounds.Serves on assigned departmental committees.Promotes and maintains open lines of communication with all departmental staff.Attends/contributes to monthly departmental and discipline specific meetings.
Organizational Expectations:
Adheres to the Hospital and departmental policies and procedures.Adheres to the Code of Ethics, Customer Service Standards and the Patient's First mission as demonstrated through positive patient/guest relations, positive and effective interactions with staff, formulating and meeting developmental goals.Responsible for meeting all the department's expectations in all areas of Respiratory Care for all age groups.Completes all clinical charting to established standards.Completes all billing entries accurately and in a timely manner.Evaluates bronchial hygiene therapy and report findings to the Medical Director and Bronchial Hygiene Committee.Assists with the collection of quality management data.

Required:
Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) - National Board of Respiratory Care.Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) - National Board of Respiratory Care (within one year of hire or promotion).Respiratory Care Practitioner (RCP) - Illinois Department of Professional Regulation.Basic Life Support - American Heart Association.Advanced Cardiac Life Support - American Heart Association.Neonatal/Pediatric Specialist (NPS) - National Board of Respiratory Care (within Neonatal ICU).Associate's degree in Applied Science (AAS) - Respiratory Therapy.Minimum of 2 years of Critical Care Experience.Preferred:
Certified Pulmonary Function Technologist (CPFT) - National Board of Respiratory CareRegistered Pulmonary Function Technologist (RPFT) - National Board of Respiratory Care.Bachelor's in Respiratory Therapy or Master's Degree in science.
