The Medical Research Specialist performs professional and technical tasks, and participates in a variety of difficult research procedures. This position performs a variety of sensitive, difficult tests, determinations, analytical procedures and investigations using both standard and special procedures, equipment, examination and analyses. This position organizes the laboratory, maintains, sets up, operates and calibrates lab equipment as needed, and orders lab supplies. This position maintains transgenic mouse colony, genotype mice, and organizes and coordinates breeding programs for several colonies of mice. This position participates in the care of, and in procedures, involving large animals.

The Medical Research Specialist performs complex chemical, specimen, radiation and physical analyses, requiring the exercise of ingenuity, improvisation and judgment. The Medical Research Specialist makes decisions and determinations on assigned projects within limits established by supervisors. The Medical Research Specialist prepares complete reports and written analyses as required for all phases of projects and prepares data and recommendations for staff members and investigators use. The candidate will also instruct and train other staff and students in basic laboratory techniques as required by the Principal Investigator.

• Perform a variety of sensitive, difficult tests, determinations, analytical procedures and investigations using both standard and special procedures, equipment, examination and analyses.

• Maintain, set up, operate and calibrate lab equipment as needed, order lab supplies.

• Maintain transgenic mouse colony, genotype mice, organize and coordinate breeding programs for several colonies of mice.

• Perform complex chemical, specimen, radiation and/or physical analyses, requiring the exercise of ingenuity, improvisation and judgment.

• Make decisions and determinations on assigned projects within limits established by supervisors.

• Prepare complete reports and written analyses as required for all phases of projects; prepare data and recommendations for staff members and investigators use.

SPECIAL REQUIRED ABILITY FOR INCUMBENTS WHO HAVE CONTACT OR EXPOSURE TO ANIMALS OR ANIMAL TISSUES:Ability to complete and pass successfully the required occupational health screening referenced in the University's Animal Handler Health Surveillance Program on an annual basis.

REQUIRED BACKGROUND CHECK, PHYSICAL, AND DRUG SCREENING FOR INCUMBENTS WHO HAVE CONTACT OR EXPOSURE TO ANIMALS OR ANIMAL TISSUES:

Selected candidates must complete and pass a background check and an occupational health screening as a condition of employment. For identified jobs, a drug screening will also be required. The background investigation, required occupational health screening, and any required drug screening will be conducted after a conditional employment offer has been extended.

• Bachelor's Degree and three years of directly related experience

• Minimum two years of basic science laboratory experience is heavily preferred
