Position Information
This position is located in the Medical Examiner's Office of Cobb County Government.
The selected candidate must be able to work a flexible schedule to meet the needs of the business which may include evenings, weekends and/or holidays. This position must also be available to receive and respond to telephone inquiries from home, while working on-call.A resume must be attached to application in order to be deemed complete.Essential Functions
Plans, allocates and monitors time, people, equipment, and other resources to ensure efficient execution and completion of work.
Monitors personnel and staff policies and procedures.
Performs autopsies, gross and histological examinations of surgical specimens and prepares reports of findings.
Reviewing data and directing the laboratory staff as and when required.
Conducting the task of forensic pathology.
Examines the body structures and internal organs of human bodies in order to trace the cause of death, disease or illness.
Directs the determination and certification of causes of death, proper preparation of records and release of property of deceased persons.
Directs the preservation of the chain of evidence.
Reviews reports of other County agencies involved in death investigations.
Testifies in legal proceedings or hearings when requested.
Advises health departments, and government agencies involved in death investigations with relevant findings.
Provides training and instruction on forensic pathology principles and investigative techniques.
Maintains current knowledge of industry, regulatory and legislative developments affecting the operations of the Medical Examiner's Office.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Medical Doctor licensed to practice medicine in the State of Georgia or the ability to obtain Georgia licensure as required by state law; successful completion of an anatomic pathology residency and forensic pathology fellowship; certification by the American Board of Pathology in Anatomic Pathology and Forensic Pathology or certification by the American Board of Pathology in Anatomic Pathology and Board eligibility in Forensic Pathology. A Board eligible candidate accepted for the position would be expected to obtain Board certification in Forensic Pathology within 2 years of hire.
Licenses and Certifications
Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess a Georgia Medical License. American Board of Pathology certification in Anatomic Pathology. American Board of Pathology certification or Eligibility in Forensic Pathology.
Physical Abilities
While performing the essential functions of this job, the incumbent is frequently required to lift, move or carry objects up to 50 pounds; ascend or descend ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles; utilize feet and legs or hands and arms; maintain body equilibrium to prevent falling when walking, standing, crouching, or navigating narrow, slippery, or erratically moving surfaces; bend body downward and forward by bending spine and legs; move about on hands and knees or hands and feet; use hands to finger, handle or feel objects; and to reach with hands and arms. Occasionally incumbent maybe required to push/pull objects in excess of 100 pounds.
Sensory Requirements
Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, odor, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.
Environmental Factors
While performing the essential functions of this job, the incumbent is exposed to outside weather conditions during death scene investigations; non-weather related cold temperatures; conditions such as fumes and noxious odors; and possible exposure to biological, chemical and radiologic hazards. Working hours may require irregular hours, on-call and shift times.
