POSITION SUMMARY:Performs diversified clinical duties in support of the CTSA physician practice. Collaborates with the CTSA surgeons in the delivery of care, and treatment to patients. Will share call times equally, to provide consistent coverage on nights, weekends, and holidays. Call coverage includes CVOR and inpatient calls overnight.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:Under the direct supervision of the Cardiothoracic Surgical physicians and within established Catholic Medical Center departmental policies and procedures, the incumbent performs the following functions:1. Serves as surgical first assist/ and vein harvests in the Operating Room and performs procedures at the bedside as described by the surgical physical assistant core privileges.2. Gathers pertinent information, interviews patients and performs physical examinations on patients within established standards of care and practice. Promptly reports critical decompensation or change in expedited progress to the physicians, formulates a differential diagnosis and plan based on this assessment.3. Write orders including diagnostic tests and medication, after consultation with the appropriate physician to accomplish a long-term plan of care. Need to be self-sufficient, and fairly autonomous in rounding on step down patients and seeing office patients.4. Dictates history, physicals and surgical consults promptly, daily assessments.5. Performs daily assessments of patients as directed by the physicians, to include relevant interval history, physical exam and review of objective data and records in medical record.6. Utilizes critical thinking to provide care for 8-15 patients fairly independently while covering step-down unit. CATHOLIC 7. Visits patients after procedures to assess their status, answer appropriate questions and provide emotional support to patients and family members.8. Discharges patients, write prescriptions, completes necessary paperwork and dictates discharge summaries.9. Recognizes and reports relevant and critical information that requires urgent attention in a timely manner.10. Works collaboratively and cooperatively with all members of the multi-disciplinary team.11. Demonstrates courtesy, respect and caring to patients, families, physicians and coworkers and maintains professional rapport with external parties and organizations.12. Provides and promotes effective and compassionate care for patients and their families.13. Documents physical findings and patient response in EMR.14. Upon completion of an abnormal diagnostic test, collaborates with surgeon to formulate an appropriate plan of care based on physical and clinical findings.15. Communicates with referring physicians to review abnormal test results. Documents all interactions in the patient's medical record.16. Contact patients with follow up information of testing and updated plans when indicated. Documents all interactions in the patient's medical record.17. Contacts patients in response to questions and concerns. Documents all interactions in the patient's medical record.18. Adheres to guidelines for appropriate billing and coding all patient encounters. Promptly submits billing information.19. Provides backup for clinical emergencies when the rounding physician is not immediately available during regular daytime hours.20. Assists in developing protocols and treatment plans, which improve the delivery of care to CTSA patients.21. Adhere to infection control, safety, and to Universal Precaution Procedures.22. Identify problems and function independently and when appropriate collaborate with others to seek resolution.23. Actively participates in staff meetings.24. Participate in continuing education activities, read professional journals, maintain professional affiliations and licenses and strive to increase professional skill and knowledge.25. Evaluate own practice, goals and skills, update as needed.26. Ensures confidentiality of employee, legal, client/patient, budget and all company matters.27. Submits CME and vacation time to the supervisor in accordance with the practice guidelines which are subject to change to best meet the needs of the practice.

WORK SCHEDULE:four days/week, provide coverage across service line to include rounding/OR call and weekend coverage.

Qualifications

Education:Graduate of an accredited Physician Assistant Program

Experience:Experienced first assist and vein harvesting, preferredTwo (2) or more years as a Physician Assistant

Licensure/Certification:Licensed by the state of New Hampshire as a Physician Assistant with national certificationBasic Life Support (BLS) certification required.Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification required.CSU-ALS/CALS or obtain within one year of hire
