Job Purpose

EnerSys is seeking a dynamic and experienced

Director of Cell Engineering

for our cutting-edge gigafactory. This role will initially focus on project management as we ramp up production of lithium-ion battery cells, with the intent of transitioning into a full-time Director role overseeing local aspects of lithium-ion cell design, development, and engineering. You will lead a team of highly skilled engineers in advancing our energy storage solutions, driving innovation, and ensuring excellence in lithium-ion cell performance across multiple applications. This position combines technical expertise, project management skills, and strong leadership to support our mission of delivering advanced energy solutions.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Technical Leadership:

Oversee and guide a team of engineers in the design and development of next-generation lithium-ion cells, including requirements specification, modeling and simulation, electrochemical composition, and overall cell architecture.Provide hands-on technical expertise to ensure that the design, testing, and implementation of lithium-ion battery components meet the highest performance standards.Project Management (Initial Focus):

Lead project management efforts, overseeing timelines, milestones, and resource allocation for lithium-ion cell development projects during the gigafactory's initial operational phase.Work closely with cross-functional teams to ensure project alignment and on-time delivery as production capacity expands.Research and Development:

Spearhead the research of new materials, technologies, and processes aimed at improving lithium-ion cell energy density, safety, and cost-effectiveness.Lead the team in implementing innovative solutions and developing tools and strategies for lithium-ion cell design and manufacturing.Quality Assurance:

Develop, implement, and continuously improve quality control measures to ensure lithium-ion cells meet industry standards and exceed performance expectations.Collaborate with the quality assurance team to identify, analyze, and address issues related to cell production and performance.Team Leadership:

Transition into a full-time leadership role, managing and mentoring a growing team of engineers. Cultivate a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement.Set team performance goals, provide ongoing feedback, and conduct regular evaluations to foster professional growth.Cross-Functional Collaboration:

Collaborate with teams across the company, including manufacturing, product development, and testing, to ensure seamless integration of lithium-ion cells into battery systems and modules.Foster strong inter-departmental communication to drive project success and optimize battery performance.Compliance and Regulatory Adherence:

Ensure all lithium-ion cell development processes comply with industry regulations, safety standards, and applicable compliance requirements.Stay updated on evolving regulations and standards in the lithium-ion battery industry to ensure best practices.Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical Engineering, or a related field.10+ years of relevant engineering experience, with at least 5 years in lithium-ion cell development.Proven experience in leading engineering teams and managing projects.In-depth knowledge of lithium-ion cell chemistry, design, and testing methodologies.Strong understanding of battery materials, manufacturing processes, and performance optimization.Familiarity with industry regulations and safety standards (e.g., UN/DOT, IEC, ISO) related to lithium-ion batteries.Excellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.Preferred Qualifications:

Master's or PhD in Mechanical, Electrical, Chemical Engineering, or a related field.12+ years of experience in lithium-ion battery development, including advanced knowledge of electrode design, cell assembly, and electrochemical modeling.Experience working in a gigafactory or large-scale battery manufacturing environment.Project Management Professional (PMP) certification or similar project management credentials.Demonstrated success in bringing new lithium-ion battery products from concept to production.Experience with advanced modeling, simulation tools, and digital twins for battery systems.Knowledge of emerging trends in energy storage technology, including solid-state batteries and next-gen materials.
