Job Description

Gilead's Legal team is seeking a creative, agile, and diligent advisor to join the Privacy & Data Ethics team. This role will have broad responsibility for managing the Company’s global privacy program as well as leading the US privacy compliance strategy.

About the Role

The Privacy & Data Ethics team provides leadership and counsel across Gilead to enable consistent, effective privacy practices which minimize risk and ensure the responsible use of data. The Director will partner cross-functionally with Gilead’s Legal Business partners, IT Security & technology teams, and business leaders to advise on cutting-edge, privacy issues relating to all aspects of Gilead’s US commercial business, including, but not limited to, consumer-facing websites, provider engagement, mobile and other applications, compliance, policy, and training. The Privacy and Data Ethics team is fast-paced and collaborative, as we work on challenging technical and compliance issues, in a rapidly evolving privacy landscape.

Foster City, CA or Parsippany, NJ

Hybrid work schedule Tuesday-Thursday for above locations

Essential Duties and Job Functions

This Director will serve as a key member of and leader within the team. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Serving as key strategic advisor and subject matter expert to US Commercial business

Defining compliance with new laws, and regulations, including enforcement actions

Advising key stakeholders on best practices and compliance with US privacy and data protection by:

Supporting a privacy-by-design approach

Ensuring compliant data collection and use

Enabling the adoption and use of emerging technologies, including AI/ML

Serving as a resource to Gilead’s contracting functions to ensure successful negotiation of data privacy-related contract terms in its operational agreements across a wide spectrum of partners and vendors typical to the biopharma industry.

Advising on corporate privacy policies and procedures.

Assist in the development and delivery of privacy training materials and other communications to increase employee understanding of responsible data handling practices and procedures, and compliance obligations.

Coordinate with business teams to ensure awareness of best practices on privacy and data security issues.

Serving as a key resource for legal department colleagues in the understanding of changing privacy regulations and enterprise compliance obligations.

Minimum Requirements:

BA/BS degree

8+ years privacy experience at a law firm or in-house

Preferred Skills:

J.D. from a nationally accredited law school preferred but not required.

CIPP certification a plus.

Expert knowledge of privacy laws, regulations, and best practices.

Experience working in ad-tech and familiarity with the digital ecosystem, including use of cookies, pixels and other tracking technologies.

Team-oriented attitude and the ability to collaborate and communicate with individuals of all levels.

Ability to provide pragmatic and actionable advice to clients on various obligations and risks under privacy and data security laws.

Strong eye for detail with sharp analytical skills; excellent judgment and strategic thinking ability.

Ability to prioritize and handle multiple projects.

Proven success in process development, implementation and project management.

Results-oriented, proactive, responsible and pragmatic

Passionate about solving complex problems in creative, efficient and cost-effective ways.

Translate global compliance environments into actionable policies and processes that enable business objectives.

The salary range for this position is: $205,700.00 - $266,200.00. Gilead considers a variety of factors when determining base compensation, including experience, qualifications, and geographic location. These considerations mean actual compensation will vary. This position may also be eligible for a discretionary annual bonus, discretionary stock-based long-term incentives (eligibility may vary based on role), paid time off, and a benefits package. Benefits include company-sponsored medical, dental, vision, and life insurance plans*.
