Atmospheric and Oceanic Chemistry Modeler
Science Systems and Applications, Inc, Lanham, Maryland, United States, 20706
Science Systems and Applications, Inc. (SSAI) seeks a talented and goal-oriented Chemistry Modeler to join our team supporting NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC). The successful candidate will develop, implement, run, and validate numerical models of atmospheric and oceanic chemical processes. This role is critical in advancing our understanding of chemical interactions that influence climate, environmental pollution, and ecosystem health.
Job Responsibilities:
* Develop, implement, calibrate, and validate numerical models to simulate chemical reactions in Earth system components such as the atmosphere, oceans, and terrestrial ecosystems* Apply computational chemistry methods to analyze the impacts of natural processes and human activities on air and water quality, climate change, and geochemical cycles* Work with interdisciplinary teams to integrate chemical models into our very large and complex Earth system models* Simulate atmospheric chemistry, including greenhouse gases, aerosols, and pollutants, to assess their effects on air quality and climate* Model ocean biogeochemical processes, including nutrient cycling, carbon sequestration, and acidification* Analyze and interpret model outputs, compare them with observational data, and adjust models for accuracy and performance* Stay up to date with advancements in Earth science chemistry modeling and incorporate new techniques and methods into our models* Collaborate with geoscientists, climate modelers, and environmental scientists to provide insights for policymaking, environmental management, and resource planning* Document research methods, model results, and findings in scientific reports and peer-reviewed publications* Present findings at scientific meetings and to stakeholders in government, industry, and academia
Required Qualifications:
* Ph.D. or equivalent in Atmospheric Chemistry, Environmental Science, Chemistry, or related field, with 2 years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience* Experience with Earth system models (e.g., CESM, WRF-Chem, GEOS-Chem, or MOZART) and familiarity with their chemical modules* Strong programming skills in languages such as Python, Fortran, or C++* Familiarity with high-performance computing environments (HPC) and parallel processing (MPI, OpenMP)* Proficiency with Linux shell scripting, and collaborative version control software such as Git* Experience with data analysis and visualization tools (e.g. MATLAB, Python libraries)* Ability to work with large datasets, including satellite and in-situ observations, to validate and improve model performance* Ability to work independently and within interdisciplinary teams* Strong written and oral communication skills* This position requires US Permanent Residency or US Citizenship
Desired Qualifications
* Experience with data assimilation techniques, integrating observational data into chemical models* Familiarity with machine learning or artificial intelligence applications in Earth science modeling* Experience with cloud computing platforms (AWS, Google Cloud) for large-scale simulations* Knowledge of regulatory and policy frameworks related to climate change, air quality, and environmental protection
EOE, including disability/vets
