Position Function:

The National Strategic Planning & Analysis Research Center (NSPARC) at Mississippi State University invites applications for a Senior Programmer Analyst (JAVA). The successful candidate will assume lead analyst responsibilities and provide assessment and programming support to the analytic staff of an active university research center. This position requires designing, developing, coding, maintaining, and testing of complex application software and their associated database systems, coordinating activities of junior staff members, and coordinating across units within the center.

Salary Grade : 16

Department Profile:

National Strategic Planning & Analysis Research Center (NSPARC) conducts research and creates customized solutions in areas of economic, workforce, business, and community development.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Assume lead analyst role for small applications and assume subsystem responsibility for major application development projects. Coordinate programming activities and provide technical assistance to junior analytic staff members. Maintain a familiarity with the latest developments in information technology and make recommendations as appropriate. Work independently under overall project objectives and requirements. Code efficiently and adhere to established programming procedures and standards. Design, code, and test application software, as well as modify existing software to reflect changes in system requirements or hardware configuration per investigator or administrative requests. Prepare and maintain quality documentation to manage program development and revisions. Prepare and maintain instructions and user documentation for users/operators. Prepare test data and validate software for accuracy and modify programs to increase operating efficiency. Mentor and advise junior level programmers in how to diagnose, analyze, and troubleshooting software systems. Communicate effectively with customers and executive staff regarding software system objectives, and proposed solutions. Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Computer Engineering or related area and a minimum of two years of experience with information systems, relational databases and object oriented programming or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Demonstrated proficiency in one or more of the following languages: JAVA, Javascript, Python, Rust, Go, C++, C#, Objective-C, Swift. Strong technical skills with JAVA and SQL in a web setting, consideration will be given to those that have experience with development of large-scale information systems for governmental entities, and with modifying, analyzing, and comprehending complex legacy information systems. The ability to comprehend how medium-sized software with complexity are architected and constructed.

Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Computer Engineering or related area and three years of experience with information systems, relational databases and object oriented programming or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

The ability to effectively communicate with customers and executive staff regarding technical complexity. The candidate should be able to work well with both their own teammates and individuals across other teams when collaborating on center-wide objectives. The candidate should demonstrate a high level of intellectual curiosity, and a willingness to creatively solve problems independently.
