The Workload Management (WLM) team under M365 is responsible for managing execution of millions of background and system tasks for M365 backend servers. We are applying various technologies to maximize resource utilization while ensuing end user experiences are not impacted by keeping the giant system running in a stable and efficient way. We are driving continuous improvement towards integrated and intelligent automated operations.

As a Senior Data Scientist, you’ll design experiments, create models, develop algorithms, and define metrics that directly impact the Substrate Workload Management team’s operations. In this role, you'll work to enhance algorithm efficiency through timely research, conduct in-depth analyses, test hypotheses, and build skills in collaborating and communicating with engineers, product managers, and executives.

Responsibilities

As a Senior Data Scientist, your responsibilities are:

Apply your expertise in quantitative analysis, data mining, and the presentation of data to develop experiments and provide algorithmic problem-solving solutions.

Conduct AB testing. Design, execute and analyze experiments to prove improvements and change attribution.

Build data manipulation, processing, and data visualization tools and share these tools and your knowledge across the team, and Microsoft.

Have curiosity and apply analytical skills to dive deep into data to find key insights that impact the business.

Utilize tools like SQL, R, Python to execute analyses.

Engage with senior management in making key business decisions.

Mentor others in the team.

Qualifications

Required/Minimum Qualifications:

Doctorate in Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Econometrics, Economics, Operations Research, Computer Science, or related field AND 1+ year(s) data-science experience (e.g., managing structured and unstructured data, applying statistical techniques and reporting results)

OR Master's Degree in Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Econometrics, Economics, Operations Research, Computer Science, or related field AND 3+ years data-science experience (e.g., managing structured and unstructured data, applying statistical techniques and reporting results)

OR Bachelor's Degree in Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Econometrics, Economics, Operations Research, Computer Science, or related field AND 5+ years data-science experience (e.g., managing structured and unstructured data, applying statistical techniques and reporting results)

OR equivalent experience.

2+ years customer-facing, project-delivery experience, professional services, and/or consulting experience.

1+ years in cloud computing technologies such as Azure, AWS and/or Google Cloud.

Other Requirements:

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings:

Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud background check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter.

OR Bachelor's Degree in Data Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Econometrics, Economics, Operations Research, Computer Science, or related field AND 7+ years data-science experience (e.g., managing structured and unstructured data, applying statistical techniques and reporting results)

OR equivalent experience.

Data Science IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $117,200 - $229,200 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $153,600 - $250,200 per year.
