SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the assistant manager, the entry-level part-time copy editor will edit text for errors in grammar, punctuation, and spelling; and check for readability, style, and agreement with appropriate editorial style guide, and suggest revisions, such as changing words and rearranging sentences and paragraphs to improve clarity or accuracy. May conduct online research, confirm sources, and verify facts, dates, and content. Edits materials for graduate theses and dissertations, journals, books, marketing materials, and special projects.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES DEPENDING ON LOCATION:

Copyedit written content (e.g., theses, dissertations, journal articles, marketing and other copy) for correct spelling, grammar, punctuation, and syntax.Ensure consistency in spelling, hyphenation, numerals, capitalization, and use of acronyms/abbreviations.Revise text for clarity, readability, and consistency.Understand and consistently reflect the style guide (e.g., APA, CMOS) chosen by the author or as required by San Diego State University (SDSU).Excellent written and verbal communication skills in the English language. Effectively communicate within the department, with authors, and other interested parties via email, telephone, or in person.Must comply with and ensure continued, consistent compliance with all company policies, and federal, state, and local laws/regulations including but not limited to: employment, safety, and health.Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

MINIMUM EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

Earned (or in pursuit of a) bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, or English combined with at least 1 year of previous writing and proofreading experience. OR a high school diploma or a General Education Development (GED) degree and 2+ years of editing experience.

Proficiency in spelling, grammar, and punctuation, and ability to make constructive suggestions to improve language, tone, and readability. Strong computer skills, especially Microsoft Office (including proficiency with MS Word's track changes), Google Workspace, and Adobe DC. Proficiency with Chicago and APA style guides; knowledge of MLA style preferred. Excellent written and verbal communication skills in the English language. Ability to remain detail-oriented and focused when processing large amounts of text and to meet deadlines. Basic knowledge of legal issues involved in publishing, such as libel and plagiarism. Willingness to collaborate with a creative team and others.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS OR STANDARDS REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

Must be able to read, write and understand English. Requires the ability to follow verbal and written instructions, guidelines and objectives. Requires the ability to read, comprehend, analyze, and interpret general business information and policy manuals. Requires the ability to write reports and communicate effectively using telephonic, written, and electronic means. Requires the ability to effectively and respectfully present information one-on-one, and in small group situations to customers, management and employees of the organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

Must be able to perform basic math functions; add, subtract, multiply and divide.

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions delivered in oral or written form.

MANUAL DEXTERITY:

Must be able to utilize a computer. Requires the ability to use a variety of office machines and equipment.

PHYSICAL COMMUNICATION:

Must have the ability to talk/expressing and/or exchanging ideas and hear/perceiving sounds.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Must be able to operate office equipment such as computers, copy machines, and fax machines. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit; handle objects; keypad or papers and books. Employee is frequently required to sit and may occasionally stand and/or walk/move. Must be able to move, lift or carry heavy objects or materials up to 10 pounds. Specific visual abilities required by this job include close vision and color vision for extensive reading and interpretation of reports and documents.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND HAZARDS

Work is regularly performed in a traditional office setting with occasional site visits to the SDSU Graduate Division offices. The noise level in the work environment is moderate.

BACKGROUND CHECK INFORMATION:

A background check will be conducted after a conditional offer of employment is extended by the company and accepted by the applicant and must be satisfactorily completed prior to any applicant beginning work in a full-time, part-time non-student, or sensitive student capacity with Aztec Shops Ltd.
