Overview:
Join our YMCA Aquatic Team! This position supports the work of the Y, a leading non-profit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. Maintains safe swimming conditions in the pool, on the pool deck, and surrounding areas. Creates a safe and positive atmosphere that promotes member safety and engagement in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.Not yet lifeguard certified? Check out certification classes and course fee reimbursement opportunities at the YMCA here: https://ymcanj.org/programs/adult-programs/american-red-cross-lifeguard-certification/Responsibilities:Maintains active surveillance of the pool area and remain on duty and in an alert state until properly relieved from duty.Knows, reviews, implements, and discusses all safety rules, policies, and emergency procedures with all members and rentals. Responds to emergency or unsafe situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies, procedures, and completes related reports as required.Arrive at your designated location at scheduled time, dressed appropriately in lifeguard attire (lifeguard shirt, bathing suit, easily removed foot gear, water bottle, and sunscreen).Completes mandatory staff trainings and attends all staff meetings (in-person & online). Attends monthly in-service trainings in accordance with YMCA standards, and the state Health Department Code.Checks pool, pool deck, and equipment for hazardous conditions upon arrival and departure, and maintains cleanliness. Ensures that all appropriate equipment and supplies are available as needed.Performs chemical testing when not actively guarding and maintains accurate records as required by the YMCA and the state Health Department code. Reports any discrepancies with chemical readings to immediate supervisor.Maintains effective, positive relationships with the members, participants, and other staff..Qualifications:Minimum age of 15.Certifications: Current YMCA, American Red Cross, or equivalent accepted by the Bathing Code Lifeguard, CPR, First Aid, and AED certifications.Ability to maintain certification-level of physical and mental readiness.Must demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA standards.
