The NAU system title for this position is Laboratory/Research Facility Administration Manager.This position is an on-site position which requires the incumbent to complete their work primarily at an NAU site, campus, or facility with or without accommodation. Job Description
NAU\'s University Core Facilities is hiring for a Core Facility Manager. The position requires strong organizational, technical, and interpersonal skills, and an ability to work with scientists on a diverse range of research projects. The Core Facility Manager will oversee the day-to-day operations in the Imaging and Histology Core Facility (IHCF), including operation and routine maintenance of the scanning electron, transmission electron, and confocal microscopes as well as a host of instrumentation to serve histology services or other diverse uses in the facility. The Manager will oversee training and supervision of core facility users, scheduling of instrumentation, and will provide basic experimental design and data analysis to users. The Manager will work with the University Comptroller and the Vice President for Research office to develop recharge rates, assist with invoicing of billed services to facility clientele, and will aid the development of a business plan for the long-term sustainability of the facility. The Manager will partner with academic departments to provide formalized instructional training for students (up to two courses per year) through approved coursework, internships, research traineeships or independent study courses.
Facility and Recharge Center Oversight - 25%
Maintains an updated schedule of rates on fee-for-service activities in the core, developed in conjunction with the NAU Comptroller\'s office.Oversees instrument scheduling and access to IHCF space.Stays current with new developments related to the laboratory environment including technology, processes, and equipment.Serves as the expert on local, state, and national standards, regulations, and codes related to laboratory practice.Engages with other core facility managers on campus and within the Tri-University core facility partnership.Ensures laboratory is prepared for annual safety inspections, and coordinates response to any concerns identified in these inspections.Assists the planning and implementing of facility policies and procedures.Develops and helps revise the business plan, budget, usage, equipment needs, and growth.Maintains facility records on usage, publications, income, and expenses.
Training and Assisting of Facility Users - 25%
Ensures all users are sufficiently trained for and actively employ safe, secure and responsible operations in the facility.Establishes and implements guidelines for use of the laboratory, including procedures and protocols. Ensures that users are trained, aware, and adhering to the guidelines.Operates and maintains electro microscopes (Zeiss Supra 40VP FESEM, JEOL 1200EX-II TEM), confocal (Leica TCS SPE II) and optical microscopes and performs quality assurance checks on the experimental data.Performs and trains others on TEM and SEM sample preparation techniques (fixation, embedding, sectioning, staining, dehydration, drying, coating, etc.)Develops/revises protocols for lab equipment operation, new techniques, and sample preparation for histology and electron microscopy services.Develops protocols for other instrumentation in the core that serves its diverse user base.Performs and trains others to use microscopes and perform histology services.Performs processing, embedding, sectioning, and staining services for histology samples when requested by clients.Operates sample preparatory equipment (ultramicrotome, sputter coater, freeze dryer, glass knife maker, etc.)Consults users on experimental setup, proper use of laboratory resources, microscopy and histology sample preparation, and data analyses.Ensures laboratory is prepared for annual safety inspections, and coordinates response to any concerns identified in these inspections.
