The Principal Systems Engineer is responsible for defining and developing technical platforms and system specifications for Hologic’s top-tier products. This role involves identifying and resolving system design weaknesses, contributing to the architectural framework across products, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to develop reliable medical imaging systems and devices that enhance clinical outcomes and patient experiences.
With broad expertise and unique knowledge, the Principal Systems Engineer plays a key role in shaping company objectives and achieving goals creatively and effectively. This position requires independent judgment and the ability to navigate technical committee reviews. The Principal Systems Engineer may also supervise others and works on complex issues requiring evaluation of intangibles, fostering coordination among various groups.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Owns system architecture design and implementation from initiation through commercial launch.
Defines and communicates a shared technical vision for solutions.
Maintains expert understanding of products and clinical use for next-generation development.
Leads architectural discussions and engineering activities, making high-level design choices and setting technical standards.
Determines development processes, tools, and applications.
Ensures design reflects intended purposes and collaborates on design changes.
Serves as primary system architect for new product development, influencing product framework.
Drives continuous learning, improvement, and ideation, introducing new technologies and methods.
Leads complex design projects and product roadmaps.
Recognized as a technical expert and provides multi-layered technical expertise.
Collaborates with cross-functional teams on architectural designs and emerging technologies.
Identifies, analyzes, and resolves system design weaknesses.
Advises and mentors peers, promoting learning, creativity, and innovation.
Leads projects for significant improvements in product quality and manufacturing efficiency.
Establishes collaborative relationships within and outside the organization.
Maintains professional knowledge through workshops and trains lower-level engineers.
Education and Experience:
Non-Technical Degree: 10+ years
Technical/Advanced Degree: 8+ years with Master’s, 5+ years with PhD
Technical Skills:
Systems engineering methodologies
Physical and mathematical modeling tools
Hardware and software integration in complex systems
Medical devices, FDA QSR, ISO 13485
Risk and electrical safety standards (ISO 14971, IEC-60601-1, IEC 60601-1-2)
Software life cycle for medical devices (IEC 62304)
Product Life Cycle Management systems
Soft Skills:
Excellent written and verbal communication
Technical documentation
Group facilitation
Project management
Interpersonal skills: leadership, teamwork, coordination
Additional Skills:
Presentation development and delivery
Familiarity with Agile and Oracle (beneficial)

The annualized base salary range for this role is $132,700 - $221,200 and is bonus eligible. Final compensation packages will ultimately depend on factors including relevant experience, skillset, knowledge, geography, education, business needs and market demand.
