The Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere ( CIRA ) at Colorado State University ( CSU ) is a multi-million dollar research organization located on CSUs Foothills Campus in Fort Collins, Colorado. CIRA is a cooperative institute (CI) that is also a research department within CSUs College of Engineering, in partnership with the Department of Atmospheric Science. Its vision is to conduct interdisciplinary research in the atmospheric sciences by entraining skills beyond the meteorological disciplines, exploiting advances in engineering and computer science, facilitating transitional activity between pure and applied research, leveraging both national and international resources and partnerships, and assisting the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration ( NOAA ), CSU , the State of Colorado, and the Nation through the application of our research to areas of societal benefit. Expanding on this Vision, our Mission is to serve as a nexus for multi-disciplinary cooperation among CI and NOAA research scientists, University faculty, staff and students in the context of NOAA -specified research theme areas in satellite applications for weather/climate forecasting. Important bridging elements of the CI include the communication of research findings to the international scientific community, transition of applications and capabilities to NOAA operational users, education and training programs for operational user proficiency, outreach programs to K-12 education and the general public for environmental literacy, and understanding and quantifying the societal impacts of NOAA research. Position Summary The Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere ( CIRA ), located on the CSU Foothills Campus approximately 5 miles northwest of CSUs main campus, seeks to fill a Research Associate II or III position to support CIRAs computing research efforts and IT infrastructure. CIRA conducts research on the use of satellite data to improve analysis, forecasts, and warnings for regions and mesoscale meteorological events. The individual in this position will report to CIRAs IT Director and manage the CIRAs Linux systems and data storage located at Foothills Campus and the Walter Scott, Jr. College of Engineering Data Center ( SDC ) on the CSU main campus. This position requires a NOAA Common Access Card ( CAC ) ID badge for computer access and is therefore open ONLY to citizens of the United States and lawful permanent residents in possession of a physical USCIS Green Card. This position also requires the ability to pass a National Agency Check with Inquiries ( NACI ) Tier 1 federal background check for computer access, a valid drivers license or the ability to obtain a drivers license or access to a licensed driver, and the ability to lift objects that weigh more than 50 pounds in order to move computing equipment between CIRA and the SDC . The individual in this position will be expected to work onsite at CIRA in Fort Collins. The individual in this position may be required to provide occasional on-call 247 and/or emergency support and therefore must live within a 60-minute commute to CIRA . Occasional travel to attend meetings/conferences/trainings may be required.
