The Chief Development Officer (CDO) will lead City Bureau’s fundraising both locally in Chicago and nationally as it enters a pivotal moment of growth and evolution. This leader, in consultation and collaboration with the Executive Director, is responsible for creating the overall development vision, strategies, and metrics for City Bureau. The CDO will work closely with the staff and Board of Directors to infuse a culture of giving at City Bureau.Salary range:

$160,000 — $190,000RESPONSIBILITIESExecutive LeadershipServe as a member of City Bureau’s senior leadership team and ensure coordination of fundraising processes and procedures across the organization.Partner with the Executive Director and leaders across the organization to create and implement new programs and initiatives, which will achieve the organization’s impact goals and be attractive to individual, foundational, and corporate donors. Work cross-functionally to ensure the impact on fundraising is considered in the evaluation and selection of projects and initiatives in City Bureau’s local and national operations.Create a plan for the stewardship and growth of individual, grassroots, direct response, and institutional giving initiatives.Prioritize goals and initiatives for organizational collaboration and strategic growth for fundraising by overseeing monthly, quarterly, and yearly plans to quantify individual giving outcome goals. The CDO should furnish the organization with ambitious evidence-based revenue projections annually, while establishing longer-term goals. The CDO will monitor those goals' efficacy over time and course correct as necessary.Lead an internal review of the existing Development team and professionally develop an expanded team tailored to fit the operational goals of the organization.Deploy City Bureau leaders – including the Executive Director, Board, and senior staff – in support of fundraising initiatives, including cultivating and closing gifts.Revenue GenerationUnderstand City Bureau’s revenue potential, identify what is needed in its fundraising operations to realize that potential; assess its current capabilities; develop and execute plans to build on strengths; and fill gaps.Develop a diversified fundraising portfolio that is resilient, recession- and loss-resistant, and sustainable.Serve as the strategy creator, operational executive, and execution leader for City Bureau’s capital campaign creation and implementation.Develop and manage a portfolio of major and principal donors through all aspects of the fundraising cycle—identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.In collaboration with the Executive Director, expand the existing earned revenue strategy.Develop a giving membership program for individual donors.Oversee local, state, and federal grants development initiatives and lead staff in developing the strategy for attainment and renewal.Lead the strategy and execution of special events and fundraisers.Garner data on fundraising metrics with the goal of conducting analyses and integrating takeaways into institutional fundraising strategies.Rigorously direct the Development team in conducting and analyzing strategic prospect research. Oversee the implementation and continued maintenance of an up-to-date donor tracking system.Engage the Board in fundraising efforts to further a culture of philanthropy and advocacy for City Bureau’s mission.Lead the development and execution of an expanded grassroots donor program.Oversee the review and expansion of the current online fundraising operation.Work with leadership to leverage the existing donor base to make additional financial commitments.Staff & Operational ManagementDirectly manage current Development staff and recruit, manage, and retain a high-performing, growth-focused, team that achieves fundraising goals.Install processes enabling ongoing examination of the best fundraising practices utilized by relevant national nonprofit organizations and institutions and determine their potential applications for City Bureau.Integrate increased fundraising efficiencies, including an updated CRM.Serve as the key fundraising professional across all organizational initiatives, with a goal to increase staff collaboration. Encourage and develop fundraising skills for all levels across the organization.Review existing staff knowledge and resources, play a critical role in developing more efficient structures, processes, and staff to improve deliverables as needed.Manage the Development budget and ensure it is financially viable, sustainable, and on target for annual growth.Ensure alignment with Marketing on support for awareness, education, and broad stewardship programs for major donors as well as the strategy, coordination, and alignment of grassroots marketing efforts.Collaborate with the Operations Lead on compliance, grant management, and fundraising rules and regulations.Prepare and ensure accurate fundraising reports that include all lines of revenue.Review and create clear policy guidelines for development, including processing and accounting, donor recognition, and stewardship.QUALIFICATIONSThe ideal Chief Development Officer is an accomplished fundraising leader with proven major gift, foundation, and alternative investment fundraising experience. They must have recruited, built, and managed a fundraising team, and will have a successful track record of managing and scaling a development function in a growing organization.The CDO will have demonstrable experience in planning and managing annual and capital campaigns; managing the operational components of a comprehensive fundraising platform; designing and managing stewardship and communications strategies; and planning and managing creative special events.Leading candidates will also possess the requisite interpersonal skills necessary to develop meaningful relationships with high-capacity donors and foundations. This executive will have a passion for the work of City Bureau and the strategic vision and expertise to effectively build and operationalize the development function within the organization. Other must-have skills and experiences include—A minimum of five (5) years’ experience successfully fundraising at an executive level (VP, SVP, Chief) in organizations with $5M+ operating budgets, with a minimum of ten (10) years’ overall fundraising experience.Track record of growth:

experience scaling revenue in a nonprofit from seven- to eight-figures with a growth mindset and desire to implement successful fundraising strategies across individual, corporate, foundation, planned, alternative investment, and grassroots development initiatives.Strategic planning:

experience with leading strategic development plan construction and implementation, including ability to design strategies for the identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of donor prospects.Individual giving:

extensive experience pursuing and landing donations in the six- and seven- figure range from high-net-worth individuals.Campaigns:

experience leading the planning and management of a capital campaign.Strategic outlook:
