Storehouse Publishing, a newly established imprint of the Crown Publishing Group at Penguin Random House, seeks an Editorial Director to join its team. Reporting to the Publisher of Storehouse Publishing, the Editorial Director will solicit, acquire, evaluate and develop projects for the imprint’s emerging list, with an emphasis on diverse voices across a range of nonfiction categories, including memoir & biography, history, self-empowerment, and entertainment and pop culture centered on the Black experience in America. The scope will also include select fiction. The Editorial Director will work in close partnership with the Publisher and Associate Publisher in developing the imprint’s publishing mission and marketplace presence, which will involve engagement with an active community of aspiring authors through Storehouse’s established incubator program as well as the establishment of strategic partnerships with cultural organizations and institutions. The Editorial Director will also be responsible for recruiting and managing a small editorial team comprised of an Editor and an Editorial Assistant.Please apply by November 6, 2024 and include your resume, cover letter, and salary requirements for consideration.This is a New York-based position, with a minimum of two in-office days per week, subject to adjustment based on business needs.Responsibilities:Leverages data and market insights from Storehouse’s extensive consumer base to inform editorial decisions, acquisitions, and product development.Acquires and develops new book projects sourced from literary agents and Storehouse’s incubator program for aspiring writers, in addition to commissioning original works.Reads and evaluates manuscripts and proposals; recommends proposals for acquisition.In coordination with the Publisher and Associate Publisher, assesses potential value of projects, crafts P&Ls, formulates acquisitions requests.Works with authors on concepts, outlines, and revisions of manuscripts, including substantive and line edits.Consults with the art, production, and managing editorial departments on schedule, design, and packaging of books.Develops and maintains author, agent, and publisher contacts and engages in developmental work with authors.Tracks manuscripts through all stages of editing, design, and production.Consults with authors on style, content, and format changes.Prepares supplemental material as needed, including endorsement requests and final endorsement copy, early reading samples and other materials as requested for the sales force, along with study guide questions and value-add materials.Prepares title information sheets; processes and edits flap copy.Oversees digital editorial initiatives, including engagement through Storehouse’s online platform.Explores and champions innovative publishing formats, including digital content, multimedia projects, and interactive author experiences, to reach a broader audience.Maintains oversight of imprint’s publishing schedule, working in close coordination with the Publisher and Associate Publisher.With Publisher and Associate Publisher, regularly tracks and analyzes key performance metrics to assess the success of acquisitions and author projects, adjusting editorial strategies to optimize outcomes.Keeps abreast of trends and competitive titles.Handles daily correspondence, office work, phones, attends required meetings.Manages an editorial team, to be comprised initially of an Editor and Editorial Assistant.Handles special projects as assigned and works collaboratively with the larger team.Performs other related duties, administrative tasks, support functions as needed.Requirements:Candidates must have a minimum of 10 years editorial experience in book publishing and/or media, and a solid track record of shaping commercially successful books, as well as strong connections with literary agents.Extensive knowledge of competition and trends across the publishing marketplace.Strong line and conceptual editing skills.Strong communication and interpersonal skills—verbal and written.Strong negotiation skills.Excellent organizational skills; ability to attend to detail.Ability to work independently, under minimal supervision.Ability to work closely with authors.An entrepreneurial mindset and passion for serving historically under-represented and marginalized communities of readers and creators.Demonstrated commitment to championing diversity, equity, and inclusion in editorial practices, author recruitment, and team development, with a focus on amplifying underrepresented voices.Experience managing a team strongly preferred.Salary for this position is $120,000 - $180,000. Candidates with more than 10 years’ experience acquiring and publishing prizewinning and commercially successful adult non-fiction titles will be eligible for a salary in the range of $150,000 - $180,000. All positions are currently eligible for annual profit award or bonus, subject to company results.Company:
