The incumbent will explore the interactions between two clinically relevant bacterial species,
Mycobacterium abscessus
and
Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
These bacteria are often found co-habiting lung airways in people with cystic fibrosis and other underlying conditions like COPD. The goal of the project is to understand how
M. abscessus
and
P. aeruginosa
interact at the molecular and cellular level. The incumbent will apply state-of-the-art tools of molecular genetics, biochemistry, super-resolution fluorescent microscopy, and cell biology to characterize how each species responds to the other in a co-culture. This position provides many opportunities to learn a wide range of cutting-edge techniques used in molecular microbiology, including NextGen sequencing library preparation, sequencing and data analysis, and time-lapse imaging on both confocal and super-resolution microscopes. The Hourly Research Scientist will work in a vibrant, multi-disciplinary collaborative environment at the Wadsworth Center with research programs across a broad range of expertise.This position will be part of a dynamic team serving the Wadsworth Center's mission in the New York State Department of Health's efforts to protect and promote the health of New York's citizens. Come be a part of Science in the Pursuit of Health!Minimum QualificationsBachelor's degree in Biology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology or related field and two years of related experience; OR a Master's degree in that field and one year of related experience.Preferred QualificationsExperience in molecular biology, bacterial culturing techniques, biochemistry, protein expression and purification, fluorescence microscopy, RT-PCR, knowledge about Sanger and NextGen sequencing techniques.Conditions of EmploymentHourly, grant funded position expected to last until 09/30/2025. Compliance with funding requirements such as time and effort reporting, grant deliverables, and contract deliverables, is required.Valid and unrestricted authorization to work in the U.S. is required. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.Travel, up to 10% of the time, will be required.This position requires that the incumbent will report to the official work location and live within commuting distance to the official work location. Telecommuting will not be available.
