Strategic Communications & Legislative Affairs Specialist
to join our team!In this role you will get to craft and execute comprehensive communication plans, engaging with stakeholders to advocate for the department's technological and operational priorities, and navigating the intricate landscape of legislative processes to ensure transparent and effective communication on critical initiatives in information technology and communication systems.WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING:Drafts briefing material, talking points, information and action memoranda, and other communications products to further the organization’s mission and to support the Joint Staff Chief Data Officer (CDO)’s engagements with Department senior leaders, partners, and stakeholders.In coordination with the CDO, develops and refines the communications strategy for the office to ensure consistent messaging throughout Department, and with external audiences, including Congress and industry and interagency partners; updates products and incorporates new information frequently.Researches and distills relevant statutes, Departmental guidance and policies, and industry developments; analyzes impact to organization for CDO’s awareness.Monitors and advises on congressional activity relevant to the organization’s mission. Drafts responses to congressional requests for information and prepares material for CDO’s and JS leadership’s data-related congressional engagements.Manages staffing, adjudication of comments, and responses on behalf of the CDO, for various data-related documents and taskers in the Joint Staff’s Enterprise Task Management System.Works closely with the CDO to create and refine/iterate communications products related to organization’s budget, resourcing, and execution.Supports the CDO in conducting outreach, preparing for, and staffing various recurring meetings with partners and points of contact across the Joint Staff and Office of the Secretary of Defense.WHAT REQUIRED SKILLS YOU'LL BRING:Bachelor's Degree:
A relevant undergraduate degree in fields such as Communications, Public Relations, Political Science, International Relations, or a related field is typically required. Many professionals in this role may also have advanced degrees (Master's or JD) for a deeper understanding of policy and legal aspects.Legislative Affairs Experience:
Prior experience working in legislative affairs or a related field is highly desirable, providing practical knowledge of the legislative process and established relationships on Capitol Hill.Strategic Communications Experience:
Previous experience in strategic communications, public relations, or a related field is valuable for developing effective communication strategies tailored to legislative goals.Excellent communication skills:
Both written and verbal, are essential for crafting clear and compelling messages for various audiences, including legislators, military personnel, and the public.Political acumen:
A deep understanding of legislative processes is necessary for navigating the complex landscape of policy development and implementation.Analytical skills:
Valuable for assessing the impact of legislative proposals and understanding potential challenges.Top Secret/SCI Clearance:
