And it’s why our business strategy centers on making journalism so good that it’s worth paying for.About The RoleThe New York Times is looking for a Software Engineer, Backend to join a team of engineers and collaborate with Product, Design and Producers to develop an amazing puzzle game experience.NYT Games is a collaborative team that values inclusion, diversity and personal growth. We combine product development with a world-class suite of puzzles including beloved titles such as the NYT Crossword, Spelling Bee, Connections and Wordle. Come help us expand our portfolio of Games with social play, as we continue delivering delightful experiences to millions daily.This is a hybrid role based in our New York City headquarters.How We WorkWe build APIs in Go on AWS and GCP, iOS apps in Swift, Android apps in Kotlin and web front-ends in Typescript and React. We solve for the world of today with room to evolve for the future needs for the business. We consider quality, observability, scalability and security as first-class citizens in our code.ResponsibilitiesDevelop APIs and solve complex technical problems scaling to tens of thousands of requests per second.Collaborate with partners from different backgrounds such as Mobile Engineers, QA Engineers, Designers and Product Managers.Embrace challenges, learn from mistakes, share knowledge with others, and remain curious.Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world.You will report to a Senior Engineering Manager, Games.Basic Qualifications2+ years of experience writing performant server-side code in Go, Python, Java or similar.2+ years of experience designing system architecture and implementing and monitoring cloud infrastructure, including NoSQL databases, queues, caching layers, container runtimes, content distribution, and more.Preferred Qualifications1+ years of experience building backend systems that power native mobile frontends.1+ years of experience working with AWS technologies.1+ years of experience building backends for Games for millions of players.This role may require limited on-call hours.
